Job Description
Syracuse University Office of University Counsel seeks to hire an Assistant General Counsel who will work primarily in the areas of Litigation, Employment and Labor. As a staff member in the Office of University Counsel, the Assistant General Counsel will provide comprehensive legal advice and guidance to the University on various matters including litigation, administrative proceedings, employment and labor relations, and other duties as assigned. This position will collaborate with all attorneys in the Office of University Counsels and reports to the Deputy General Counsel.
Education and Experience
- Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Two (2) plus years of experience practicing law, ideally focused in litigation.
- Experience advising clients on complex litigation and/or labor and employment issues.
- Experience coordinating large scale document production in discovery and e-discovery.
Skills and Knowledge
- Superior written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proven ability to effectively communicate legal language and analysis to non-lawyers, including when conveying unpleasant or unwelcome information.
- Proven ability to work independently, manage several projects and meet deadlines.
- A proven work history with a commitment to the highest ethical standards.
- Demonstrated ability to use sound independent judgment and professional integrity.
- Proven record of providing prompt and effective research, with excellent analytical and writing skills.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain professional collaborative relationships with diverse groups across an organization, as well as stakeholders and community members.

Responsibilities
- Appear and represent the University in litigation and disputes to which the University is a party, including civil suits, labor arbitrations and other administrative proceedings (NYS Division of Human Rights, US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Offices of Civil Rights, etc.); coordinate with outside counsel as needed; oversee discovery and disclosure; assist with drafting briefs, answers, other response documents; prepare witnesses for depositions, trials and administrative hearings; and evaluate and negotiate settlements.
- Conduct legal research as assigned or requested to guide institutional, school, college and unit decision-making, and to support policy development or revision.
- Independently prepare correspondence, memoranda, presentations, reports, legal briefs, policy revisions, and other documents according to University policies and procedures, legal requirements, and high professional standards.
- Advise offices on campus responsible for responding to student, faculty, and staff complaints, including discrimination, harassment, and other misconduct complaints, regarding legal and policy requirements.
- Direct, conduct, or assist with internal investigations.
- Perform additional job-related duties as assigned or as appropriate.
