Job Description
Reporting to the Vice President for Advancement, Academic Programs and Partnerships, the Assistant Vice President is responsible for ensuring the management and success of fundraising efforts of an assigned significant and critical portion of Syracuse University’s schools, colleges, and academic units. The role plans and executes a comprehensive advancement program that furthers the strategic goals of the University. The AVP provides strategies, goals and management oversight of units to ensure collaboration, partnerships with central units, and alignment with university and divisional initiatives and priorities.

The position carries a portfolio of donors to further the development of strategies, plans, opportunities, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of this cohort. The role oversees and directs the Leadership Volunteer Engagement unit and its related work with the University’s advisory boards.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of fund-raising work in higher education is required.
  • Experience working with a professional/graduate school environment /constituency preferred.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.

Skills and Knowledge
  • Ability to lead and manage a comprehensive advancement plan.
  • Proven experience in the full spectrum of development including cultivation, successfully soliciting six and seven figure gifts, stewardship, and donor recognition.
  • Expert written and interpersonal communication skills including political acumen to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout a complex organization and with external constituencies.
  • Expert skills in making persuasive and compelling cases for support.
  • Exceptional organizational, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit focused on goals achievement.
  • Willingness and availability to travel domestically.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment.

Responsibilities
  • Direct and provide high-level strategy, supervision and management of the fundraising efforts to assigned school and college fundraising programs, while working in close partnership with the deans of the relevant programs.
  • Meet regularly with and direct Assistant Deans of assigned programs. Lead Assistant Deans in strategies to achieve annual fundraising goals, drive innovation and support of staff as applicable.
  • Manage and solicit a portfolio of existing and prospective donors, with a focus on individuals capable of making significant six or seven figure gifts. Develop and manage assigned portfolio to maximize giving potential of each donor and prospective donor. Provide meaningful contact or attempted contact of 100% of portfolio during any six-month period.
  • Maintain updated plans and opportunities for assigned portfolio as well as all other activity relative to donors and prospects.
  • Report results of all solicitations/gifts in the CITRUS/CRM database including meaningful interactions and ensuring the accuracy of the data entry.
  • Supervise the Director of Leadership Volunteer Engagement and provide oversight of and assistance with initiatives in association with the successful planning, programming, and execution of recruitment, support, and meetings for the University’s numerous volunteer advisory boards and groups.
  • Support the VP for Advancement, Academic Programs and Partnerships as called upon to maximize opportunities to advance the academic strength of the University.
