Job Description

The Staff Psychologist I is an 11 month full-time position that provides mental health and wellness services for the student population. Specifically, this position is responsible for the provision of short-term individual therapy, group therapy, crisis intervention, drop-in services, consultation, outreach programming, and participation in the Center’s on-call rotation.

As part of the Barnes Center, counseling is an integrated service and staff take a holistic approach to supporting students and are expected to be active members of the university community, represent counseling services on a variety of committees, and collaborate with colleagues across the university to promote student well-being.

This position must demonstrate high levels of cultural competency, be well versed at working with students from a variety of traditionally underserved and/or underrepresented backgrounds, and demonstrate an understanding of, and commitment to, social justice work. As an unlicensed provider this position must meet weekly with a licensed Psychologist for clinical supervision and have their progress notes reviewed and signed by their supervisor and is not permitted to practice without this level of supervision. This position may participate in the Training Program in aside from providing clinical supervision.

Education and Experience

  • Doctoral degree or Doctoral Candidate in clinical or counseling psychology.
  • Must be licensed within the state of New York withing two years past terminal degree.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Experience providing clinical services to culturally diverse client population required.
  • Experience with crisis intervention and the ability to conduct risk assessments and manage potentially high risk clients.
  • Experience providing group therapy preferred but not required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent time management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provision of direct clinical services including individual and group therapy, drop-in, and crisis intervention, to Syracuse University student population.
  • Timely completion of appropriate clinical documentation, case management, coordination of support services and care with other Health and Wellness offices and offices throughout the university.
  • Participation in weekly clinical supervision with a licensed Psychologist until receipt of licensure.
  • Participate on relevant committees and/or teams that have the mission of promoting health and wellness in regards to mental health, substance abuse, and/or sexual assault and relationship violence, including participation on the center’s graduate student training committee.
  • Provide outreach/education to the university community on a variety of mental health topics.
  • Participate in the Counseling Center’s on-call rotation.
