Florida State University is seeking a dynamic, innovative and student development-centered individual for the position of Graduate Assistant / Professional Intern for Group Fitness. The Graduate Assistant position is a 2-year commitment as a full-time graduate student within the Department of Campus Recreation. The Professional Intern is a time-limited 9-month position within the Department of Campus Recreation without concurrent pursuit of an academic degree.
The successful candidate will provide shared leadership for a comprehensive university-wide recreational program designed for more than 50,000 students, faculty, and staff, and will assist with cultivating and delivering the departmental brand to the entire community. They will also cultivate an environment that values inclusiveness and diversity, engage in evidence-based decision-making, foster a sense of belonging and inclusion, and promote student development and learning.

Job Summary
The Graduate Assistant / Professional Intern for Group Fitness works directly with the Assistant Director and Coordinator of Fitness Programs to enhance the overall fitness and wellness programming for Campus Recreation. This position is responsible for developing and executing group fitness program offerings for Campus Recreation. This position requires strong organization and interpersonal skills. The Graduate Assistant / Professional Intern is responsible for implementing policies and procedures which contribute to the development of a safe, professionally managed, and well-organized group fitness program. The Graduate Assistant / Professional Intern will lead the management of the group fitness program with the direct oversight of program and student staff in the areas of focus and expertise. A focus on positive customer service and student development is expected in all aspects of the program.
This position will work with and direct a student team of 25 undergraduate students in Group Fitness program. Work is performed under the supervision of the Assistant Director / Coordinator of Fitness Programs.

Key Responsibilities
- Maintain daily office hours and scheduled supervision hours.
- Assist with the recruitment, hiring, training, evaluation, and development of the group fitness instructors.
- Assist with program offerings including group fitness instructor training for potential instructors and in-service format trainings for specialty classes (i.e., Barre, Mat Pilates, Dance, etc.)
- Manage Group Fitness program promotion, registration and scheduling of activities, class sessions and special events.
- Input class schedule, program offerings, and special events in online scheduling software.
- Ensure accurate student staff payroll and track staff certifications.
- Plan, develop and conduct student staff monthly meetings and provide continuing education opportunities for student instructors.
- Teach classes in areas of fitness expertise, certification, and specialization.
- Assist with the purchase, planning, replacement and tracking of inventory of fitness equipment in the Group Fitness program.
- Work with the Fitness Leadership Team in budget planning and management.
- Work as a contributing member of the fitness program staff towards the accomplishment of program and departmental objectives.
- Collaborate with campus-based partners to deliver ACSM's Exercise Is Medicine - On Campus, special events, and programs to the university community.
- Bachelor’s degree
- Applicant must have a 3.0 GPA and appropriate GRE scores to be considered for admission to an FSU graduate programs and to qualify for the academic tuition waiver.
- One of the following certifications: ACE, ACSM or AFAA group fitness certification.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in leading group fitness classes and/or fitness programs.
- Strong professionalism, organizational and leadership skills.
- Knowledge of fitness industry trends and best practices.

Graduate School Info
- If pursuing a Graduate Assistant position, an offer will be made contingent upon acceptance into graduate school. Only the following college graduate programs are available to qualify for the in-state tuition waiver:
- Graduate Programs in FSU’s College of Health and Human Sciences
- Fall Admission deadline: April 1, 2025
- First Year: July 17, 2025 – May 21, 2026. Separate arrangements may be made on an individual basis.
- Graduate Assistants are eligible for a 2nd year contract. Summer employment may be available.
- Internship: $20 per hour (up to 28 hours per week)
- Graduate Assistant: $23.97 per hour (up to 20 hours per week), in-state tuition waiver, annual student health insurance subsidy.
