Accountable to the Board Chair and Board of Directors for the effective and efficient operation of the Habitat for Humanity affiliate of Tacoma-Pierce County, WA and for conformity with its bylaws and policies agreed upon by the Board.
Provides vision and leadership to Habitat for Humanity, the Board of Directors and Senior Leadership Team, and staff. Manages and directs the organization towards its primary objectives, based on the affiliate’s long-term strategic plan & initiatives and by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate managers. Maintains a strong advocacy for Habitat’s Mission to provide decent, affordable housing for our service area.
The focus of this job is on achieving results which are aligned with the larger picture of the organization and its strategic goals. Initiative, drive, and the ability to stay focused on results despite changing conditions, is the key to achieving the performance objectives of this job. Decision-making is focused on implementing practical, timely solutions. The job requires getting things done quickly and handling a variety of activities. The work involves innovation and creativity in generating ideas for quick response. Self-assurance and the confidence to purposely drive toward results while constantly problem-solving and engaging the commitment of others is essential. A leadership style that is firm and goal oriented, and yet motivates, trains, and engages others in an enthusiastic way is important. The emphasis on building rapport and relationships with individuals and groups requires an outgoing, poised and persuasive communication style
Essential Functions
Fund Raising and Advocacy:
- Acts as the affiliate's primary fundraiser, working with the development staff, board's development committee, and board to steward existing donors and develop new resources for the affiliate.
- Acts to establish and maintain highly effective donor relations under all organization programs.
- Represents the affiliate in the community through direct public relations programs, including personal contact, community leaders, literature, and media
- Develops and maintains strong relationships with community leaders and affordable housing partners operating in the public and private sector to advocate and build support for affordable housing both legislatively and financially.
- ·Represents the Affiliate to Habitat for Humanity International and ensures compliance with the Covenant Agreement as well as other required policies.
- Represents and advocates as the public face of the affiliate to national, state and local organizations, municipalities and jurisdictions.
Strategy:
- Develops, documents, and communicates, in conjunction with the Board, long-term strategic plans and vision for the organization
- Informs the Board of market, technology, and regulatory issues/trends that may impact HFH's goals. Provides credible alternate scenarios for planning purposes
- Develops new, creative ideas to lead the organization forward, but not to the detriment of previously established objectives
Finance:
- Monitors the environment for new methods of funding affordable housing and develops options for Board consideration then oversees implementation
- Evaluates, plans and manages opportunities for land acquisition, neighborhood developments and/or organizational strategies
- Develops for Board review and approval an annual operating plan and financial budget, and is held accountable for achieving planned results, supervises the development and distribution of HFH’s. Annual Report.
- Manages and directs the organization toward its primary objectives, departmental budgets, cash flow, etc.
- Reviews operating results, comparing them to established objectives, and takes steps to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to correct unsatisfactory results
- Responsible for producing a clean audit annually
Construction/Store Operations:
- Oversees the construction supervisor and all construction activity to ensure construction of housing projects are on schedule and budget
- Oversees all safety and health programs ensuring legal compliance and safety for all employees and volunteers.
- Oversees the management of volunteers to build the affiliates community involvement
- Oversees the procurement of building lots and/or development sites
- Oversees the successful operation of all affiliate store operations
Organization:
- Plans for long-term succession of senior management, acts as a mentor to direct subordinates, and builds a culture consistent with the affiliate’s values and strategies
- Ensures that HFH creates an environment in which employees are well trained and developed to meet the organization’s short and long-term goals
- Ensures that there are clear and appropriate standards of performance and measurements, and creates an organization that attracts and retains talented people
- Ensures that appropriate compensation and benefit programs are in place and administered properly, in conjunction with the Board of Directors
- Ensures and protects the integrity of the organization
Leadership:
- Effectively works with and manages relationships with the Board of Directors
- Ensure HFH's interest is always fully considered. Keeps the Chair and other Board Members apprised of all substantial issues, projects or concerns, along with recommended action plans
- Takes an active role in helping recruit talented board members who possess appropriate functional expertise and fundraising capabilities
- In conjunction with the Board, coordinates the development and implementation of key corporate policies, practices, procedures, processes, and guidelines
- Advises the Board about operational issues and develops and implements appropriate operational plans
- Creates and fosters a healthy and productive work culture
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
Minimum Education, Experience and Skills
- 10 to 15 years related experience and/or training within non-profit organizations, Habitat for Humanity experience preferred but not required.
- 5 to 8 years P&L and successful progressive managerial experience.
- Must be a proven, successful leader
- Possess strong visionary, leadership, interpersonal, organizational, analytical, financial and operational skills
- · Demonstrated abilities to achieve results while handling a variety of activities. Motivates and communicates effectively with all levels of people
- The ability to learn quickly and thoroughly while continually recognizing and adapting to changing conditions is critical.
- Must possess strong financial acumen and understanding of how housing financing works
- Effectively delegate to proven people.
- A full commitment to the success of the business and high standards of achievement are expected in this position.

Language Skills: Ability to effectively present complex information to elected officials, board of directors and community partners. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret contracts and legal documents. Ability to effectively present information to top management, the public and/or board of directors. Possesses public speaking skills and an ability to engage in public dialogue.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve complex problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to understand and manage risk.
Computer Skills: Strong computer skills, including spreadsheets, word processing, presentations and email. Proficiency with computer usage, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.

- Must be at least 18 and have a valid driver’s license with a good record

- The noise level at the construction sites may be loud, due to machinery, power tools and construction activities.
