Overview

The Manager of Financial Reporting will work closely with other members of the accounting and reporting teams within Talcott’s U.S. Controller’s Organization. The Controller Organization’s Accounting team is responsible for the preparation and reporting of financial information for a variety of internal and external customers. This role is ideal for an accounting or finance professional interested in growing a fast-paced career at a growing life insurance / reinsurance carrier. This role offers the opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of the Company’s operations, reinsurance arrangements, and corporate business functions, while interacting with key stakeholders across the enterprise. We are looking for individuals to bring a fresh perspective to our accounting and reporting processes and controls. This role will require strong analytical capabilities, attention to detail, and a focus on maintaining strong but efficient and controlled financial reporting processes with a goal of identifying process improvements in assigned areas, while maintaining integrity and accuracy.

Responsibilities

  • Financial Close and Reporting
  • Lead the US GAAP and US Statutory financial close and reporting processes, ensuring timely and accurate quarterly and annual deliverables.
  • Prepare and analyze earnings reports, focusing on the key drivers of financial metrics for life and annuity products, including those impacted by reinsurance agreements.
  • Enhance and expand financial reporting packages for improved insight into business performance.
  • Collaboration and Analysis
  • Partner with cross-functional teams (e.g., actuarial, investment accounting, reinsurance teams) to research and explain results, particularly for life and annuity blocks that are ceded or assumed through reinsurance.
  • Analyze and reconcile reinsurance activity, including premium payments, reserve adjustments, and settlements.
  • External and Regulatory Reporting
  • Support the preparation of external financial reporting under both US GAAP and US Statutory accounting, including compliance with NAIC requirements.
  • Ensure reinsurance transactions are accurately reflected in statutory filings, including Schedule S and related disclosures.
  • Internal Controls and Process Improvement
  • Perform required internal controls and maintain documentation under SOX, including reinsurance-specific processes (e.g., treaty compliance and financial statement impacts).
  • Develop and implement process improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability in the accounting for reinsurance and other insurance activities.
  • Special Projects and Strategic Initiatives
  • Participate in and support strategic initiatives, such as new product launches, reinsurance treaty implementations, or changes in accounting guidance
  • Contribute to ad-hoc projects such as financial modeling for reinsurance agreements, capital planning, and financial impact analysis for regulatory changes.
  • Development and Growth
  • Gain a technical understanding of the insurance and reinsurance business, particularly in areas such as capital management, variable and fixed annuity accounting, and reserve mechanics.
  • Build visibility with senior finance management by contributing to high-impact projects and reports.

Qualifications

  • Education and Certifications
  • Undergraduate degree in accounting required; CPA, MBA, and Big 4 experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience working in the financial services industry, with a focus on accounting and reporting for insurance and reinsurance entities.
  • Demonstrated experience with statutory filings (e.g., NAIC Annual and Quarterly Statements), including detailed schedules.
  • Strong understanding of reinsurance accounting, including ceded and assumed treaty structures, reinsurance recoverables, and retrocession arrangements.
  • Experience with life and annuity products, including knowledge of MYGA, FIA, and VA products, as well as their accounting under GAAP and STAT.
  • Technical Skills
  • Proficiency in accounting for complex financial instruments, such as embedded derivatives, guaranteed minimum benefits, and indexed products.
  • Working knowledge of deferred acquisition costs (DAC), value of business acquired (VOBA), and other reserve-related accounts specific to life and annuity products.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and general ledger applications such as PeopleSoft, Oracle, or SmartView.
  • Ability to consolidate, manipulate, and analyze large datasets for trending analysis and reporting purposes, with experience in building visual dashboards and presentations.
  • Regulatory and Standards Knowledge
  • Strong familiarity with regulatory accounting requirements, including US GAAP, US Statutory (NAIC), and key updates such as ASU 2018-12 (LDTI).
  • Knowledge of reinsurance-specific financial reporting requirements and treaty provisions impacting accounting treatment (e.g., risk transfer tests, reserve credit calculations).
  • Other Skills
