What are the responsibilities and job description for the Substation – Transformers and Distribution Systems (Associate; Specialist; Senior) position at Talen Energy?
Talen Energy is soliciting candidates interested in filling the position of Substation (Associate; Specialist; Senior) at the Cumulus Campus located near Berwick, Pennsylvania. We are currently hiring for all 3 levels. Position level and pay will be determined by experience.
The Cumulus Campus is located less than 30 miles from Wilkes-Barre, which is at the western edge of the picturesque Pocono Mountains vacation region, we are conveniently located near the main interstates which connect all the major East Coast cities.
Under general direction, on-shift substation team will be responsible for the 24x7 operations and troubleshooting activities associated with large power transformers and switchyard equipment at the Cumulus Campus. A qualified candidate will monitor, oversee and control the safe and reliable operations of the power systems. They will also provide switching, tagging, and direction to other employees to support, maintenance and distribution of high quality, timely and cost-effective power to the customers.
What will you own?
- Provide technical expertise to operate the local on-site power system including the 500, 230, 69, 34.5 and 12kV distribution system.
- Develop and implement trending and monitoring plans for assigned systems/components to ensure safe reliable equipment performance.
- Provide technical expertise and consultation to identify and resolve emergent and persistent issues
- Develop and implement procedures to maintain, troubleshoot, investigate, evaluate, and repair the on-site power system including the substations, transformers, transmission lines, underground duct-banks, and equipment.
- Provide on-shift 24x7 system monitoring, troubleshooting and field switching on any of the Cumulus Campus Substations.
- Directly interface with other workgroups (i.e. Substation Management, Customer and Campus Leadership) regarding system issues, improvement initiatives, and repair strategies.
- Interface with the nuclear plant operations teams to coordinate planned and emergency outages and restoration activities.
- Build relationships that will facilitate knowledge transfer, cross functional knowledge of related work groups, and ability to present work products effectively.
- Assists in a variety of topics including developing procedures, improved design recommendations or new or better equipment purchase recommendations.
What you have:
Basic Qualifications
ASSOCIATE:
- 2 year Technical Associates Degree (in lieu of experience)
- Ability to obtain a NERC Reliability Coordinator Certification within 6 months of employment
- Ability to obtain a PJM Transmission & Generation Operator Certification within 6 months of employment
SPECIALIST:
- A minimum of 2 years of Transmission Operations, Distribution Operations or Substation Operations.
- Ability to obtain a NERC Reliability Coordinator Certification within 3 months of employment
- Ability to obtain a PJM Transmission & Generation Operator Certification within 3 months of employment
SENIOR:
- A minimum of 5 years of Transmission Operations, Distribution Operations or Substation Operations.
- Currently possess/or Ability to obtain within 3 months a NERC Reliability Coordinator Certification
- Currently possess/or Ability to obtain within 3 months a PJM Transmission & Generation Operator Certification
Preferred Qualifications
- NERC Reliability Coordinator or Transmission Operator Certification.
- PJM Transmission & Generation Certificate.
- Working knowledge of transformer operation, testing and maintenance practices
- Relay settings, testing, commissioning experience
- Field experience with maintenance of substation or transmission equipment
- Familiar with electrical design requirements for Nuclear Power plants is desired
