Do you have a deep understanding of nonprofit accounting and grant management, with a proven track record of implementing financial systems and processes in growing organizations? The Nonprofit Controller position is responsible for the overall accuracy of the books and records and the safeguarding of the organization’s assets. The Controller's discipline is responsible for the integrity and control of the organization's financial books and records as well as the process by which reports are generated. This includes regulatory reporting, management reporting, balance sheet integrity and ensuring that the organization's needs remain in focus.


This mission driven organization seeks an equity-focused Nonprofit Controller whose work will support their vision, mission, and purpose to provide access, equity, in youth sports and programming. Friendly, highly organized and laser-focused, the professional controller manages the organization's financial functions and leads activities related to accounting, asset management, accounts payable, budget, payroll, grant payments, and financial reporting.


  • Demonstrated success in managing an annual of budget of $20 million annually. Proficiency in working with restricted and unrestricted funds.
  • Directs all operational accounting activities of the organization, including but not limited to: general ledger, financial close, cash and banking, expense and revenue accounting, billing, accounts payable and receivable, payroll allocations, grant and other expense reporting. Ensures accurate and timely processing of the functions listed above.
  • Directs external financial reporting activities and ensures accurate and timely dissemination of financial reports, including but not limited to: financial statements, Form 990, Single Audit, and annual audits
  • Oversees revenue recognition, billing to ensure the accurate and timely management of all accounts receivable aging components, including: billing, cash receipts application, grant administration
  • Oversees all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems to ensure compliance with GAAP standards and regulatory requirements. Maintains robust internal controls and safeguards for all financial operation and reporting activities.
  • Prioritizes, organizes, distributes, and coordinates the flow of work for the team. Guides team performance and implements efficiencies.
  • Manage, coach, and develop team members
  • Ensures prescribed policies, procedures, and schedules are followed. Ensures that team priorities are aligned to meet organizational goals.
  • Reviews and analyzes financial statements and information and provides management updates on a monthly basis.
  • Establish and oversee roadmap for continuous improvement in transaction processing systems and implementation of changes to the systems to reflect new types of transactions, and integration with other departmental systems.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance and CPA required.

• Minimum of 5 years of nonprofit experience. At least 5 years of supervisory experience and 7 years of progressive experience in finance and accounting with management experience.

• Knowledge of tax laws and related issues for 501(c)(3) organizations, federal and state filings, and internal controls

• Expertise in accounting software and office software products

• Superior understanding of all aspects of nonprofit accounting, financial management, and FASB pronouncements.

• Experience in accounting for deferred gifts.

• Excellent organizational and management skills.

• Strong verbal and written communications skills.

• Ability to multi-task and prioritize duties.

• Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion.

• Able to produce high quality work and exercise good judgment.
