Our client, a private independent school in Brooklyn, NY is seeking a Senior Accountant to join their team.
The Senior Accountant provides support to the Business Office by assisting with the School’s accounting functions, including month-end closings, account analysis and reconciliations, and assisting with the annual financial audit. Strong communication skills, the ability to build relationships at all levels, organizational skills, and proficiency in Excel are essential. The Senior Accountant must be detail-oriented, proactive, and demonstrate a high level of accuracy in their work. This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer.
Responsibilities:
● Ensure timely and accurate processing of transactions, month-end and year-end closings and schedule preparations, accruals, and journal entries
● Analyze and reconcile general ledger accounts, identifying and resolving discrepancies.
● Prepare monthly bank account, investment account and credit card payment reconciliations
● Assist with the preparation of the School’s monthly financial reports, budget to actual statements, annual budget, forecasting, and related schedules.
● Liaise with divisional budget managers and Parents’ Association Treasurer regarding annual budget and spending
● Assist with the annual financial audit including reconciliations, year-end closing, and preparation of necessary schedules
● Maintain fixed asset schedule
● Cross-train roles within the business office; act as backup for Student Billing and Accounts Payable/Receivable functions
● Collaborate with Business Office team members on banking wires, ACH payment set up and check processing system
● Oversee preparation of 1099-Misc forms
● Ensure compliance with relevant financial regulations, accounting standards, and School policies. Monitor, and enforce internal controls to safeguard the School’s
assets and ensure the accuracy of financial records.
● Work to continuously improve the School’s accounting, financial reporting and internal control policies and procedures and maximize department utilization of
current accounting systems.
● Other projected as assigned
Qualifications:
● Bachelor’s degree in accounting
● A minimum of five years of experience, preferably in nonprofit accounting
● Strong knowledge and understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
● Impeccable attention to detail and accuracy.
● Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
● Knowledge of nonprofit accounting software (Blackbaud NXT preferred), Google suite, and Microsoft Excel are required.
● Demonstrated ability to think analytically and strategically, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously, prioritizing appropriately.
● Able to establish positive relationships and communicate effectively with various members of the community
● Able to maintain confidentiality of school records
● CPA preferred
The compensation for this position ranges from $80,000.00 - $110,000.00. Actual compensation will be dependent upon the specific role, office location as well as the individual’s qualifications, experience, skills and certifications.
