Job Overview
Collect and analyze data to estimate the time, money, materials, and labor required to construct a building.
Generally, specializes in commercial, tenant finish construction, including metal stud framing; doors, frames and hardware; drywall and finishing; and acoustic ceilings.
Estimators accurately estimate the costs of construction projects, which is vital to the survival of our business. Estimators analyze production processes to determine how much time, money, and labor a project will need. Estimators will account for many factors, including allowances for wasted material, bad weather, shipping delays, and other variables that can increase costs and lower profitability.
Estimators use software to simulate the construction process and evaluate the effects of design choices and will consult databases to compare the costs of similar projects.
Responsibilities for Estimator
Attend pre-bid walk thru meetings and collect data on existing conditions
Communicate with clients to clarify scope of work
Collect data for strategic bidding (GCs bidding, competitors bidding, timeline of project)
Provide detailed material and labor takeoff of demolition, framing, drywall, acoustic ceilings
Request material quotes from suppliers
Prepare for scope review with President before finalizing each proposal
Strategically determine appropriate markup / desired profit for each bid
Follow-up on pending bids and assemble feedback for historical data
Encourage business development by seeking new clientele
Attend occasional lunch or social / sporting event with clients
Provide annual and quarterly review and goal setting of revenue and profit
Identify factors affecting costs, such as production time, materials, and labor
Read blueprints and technical documents in order to prepare estimates
Collaborate with engineers, architects, clients, and contractors as necessary
Calculate, analyze, and adjust estimates
Recommend ways to reduce costs
Maintain records of estimated and actual costs
Meet with Foreman for kickoff meetings to review scope of work
Monitor on-going projects and attend progress meetings as required
Monitor safety on projects sites and communicate with foreman, general superintendents and Vice-President-Director of Operations as appropriate
Complete monthly invoicing of projects per contract requirements
Complete monthly review of on-going project budgets (estimated / actual costs)
Participate in monthly review of closed jobs with Director of Operations
Requirements for Estimator / Project Manager
5 years of experience with Microsoft Office Software Suite
5 years of experience with On-Screen Takeoff and Quickbid Software
Demonstrate keen ability to identify acoustic ceiling grid and tile
