Project Summary:
Funding for this position comes from the Department of Defense Congressionally Mandated Research Program Award entitled (Improving Health Care Access and Engagement for Veterans and Service Members with TBI Morbidity; I-HEAL). This project is a large multi-site Center that includes four supportive cores and four individual projects. The overall goal is to address key knowledge gaps that will improve access and engagement in high-quality, evidence-based healthcare services for Veterans/Service Members (V/SM) with traumatic brain injury (TBI)- related disability. Specific foci include the following: (Project 1) Development of a nudge intervention (electronic healthcare reminder) for providers to engage healthcare proxies when interacting with cognitive disability at risk for poor healthcare engagement, (Project 2) Development of a toolkit of adaptations for cognitively impaired individuals in need of guideline-endorsed behavioral health interventions for common polytrauma comorbidities (sleep, PTSD, depression, chronic pain), (Project 3) Adaptation, dissemination, and evaluation of readiness to deliver evidence-based team interventions for managing maladaptive behaviors after TBI, and (Project 4) Evaluation of policy for virtual health modalities for persons with TBI and polytrauma comorbidity. Collectively the four projects propose to accomplish the following overarching objectives of the FPA: (1) adapt existing interventions to promote access and engagement in healthcare; (2) engage stakeholder communities to maximize uptake and translation; (3) promote research translation that informs policy and practice through knowledge translation products and deliverables targeting key stakeholders (clinicians, Veterans, service members, caregivers, policymakers, and other researchers); (4) facilitate research and implementation to enhance access to high-quality healthcare for V/SM with TBI-related morbidity; and (5) foster development of early/mid-career researchers in advancing implementation science research on access to care for V/SM with TBI.
Job Duties:
The Project Manager is an integral member of the I-HEAL team. The employee will work with the Principal Investigators on study start-up; monitoring the scope of work and deadlines; financial management including contracts and MOUs; assist with establishing and coordinating the Cores, Engagement kick-off and final translation and team meetings; and assist with analyses, dissemination, and preparation of research products and reports.
Education and Qualifications:
The employee will have a master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., communications, public health, business administration, anthropology, sociology, psychology). The incumbent must have demonstrated knowledge of program management and administration, practices, principles, and techniques and have experience in the planning, implementation, and coordination of such systems. This position requires the ability to deal analytically and systematically with problems of organization, workflow, analysis of information requirements and planning, and project flowcharting. This position requires a background check.
Single and Multi-Center Grant Preparation and Project Management - 100%
The position is responsible for managing and coordinating several complex and related research and/or evaluation studies within a scientific portfolio. The incumbent is an experienced project coordinator with extensive knowledge as a lead research coordinator and project manager. The incumbent has extensive knowledge in managing all phases of research and possesses in-depth knowledge of regulatory, patient recruitment, and budgetary aspects of study management.
The incumbent is experienced in the complexities and challenges of running funded research studies by various funding mechanisms. The position has a strong people management and team leadership skills. Experience with multi-center collaborative teams is preferred.
The position will collaborate with Principal Investigator(s) and research stakeholders in the preparation of data collection forms, procedures, data collection (qualitative and/or quantitative), data quality assurance, presentations, final research reports, and manuscripts for publications in professional journals and mentor those skills among project members. The position will play a critical role in the preparation of final analyses for publication in an appropriate scientific journal as relevant and will assume a primary role in authorship of published results as appropriate.
Responsibilities include ongoing contacts with collaborators and collaborating sites to disseminate all materials including R&D, IRB, etc., monitor and review data from each site, problems solve any difficulties with subject recruitment, data collection or entry issues and general project procedures. The position will be responsible for obtaining or preparing outcome reports for each project on a regularly scheduled basis. Occasional travel may be required. The position will interact with local VA hospitals in VISN 8 and nationally, academic affiliates, and community partners at large in these matters.
In a scientific field, serves as a member of a team conducting substantive aspects of research where objectives are hard to define. The position will prepare reports and co-authors articles for publication in scientific journals. Publications are represented by a series of implementable additions to scientific knowledge. The position will relate experimental processes and results to the mission of the Agency by means of oral and written technical communications.
The position will work with JAHVH principal investigators, research stakeholders, and JAHVH R&D Core Directors, R&D leadership, or other designated staff to develop plans for hiring, adequate staff, evaluate research progress relative to staffing levels, and manage the project finances of assigned protocols. This includes reporting and prepare actions to meet project objectives, timelines, and deliverables (e.g., participant payments, contracts for services or goods, other project-related financial activities).
The position will review complex multi-center, multi-year financial, regulatory, and project reports and applies standard analytical techniques and evaluated workflow to determine potential problem areas to develop recommendations to propose and implement corrective actions in those areas to improve coordination between organizations at local, regional, and national organizations.
The position will have the ability to recognize opportunities for improvement and offer solutions using management principles and techniques, leading to changes in existing methods, techniques, processes, or practice. The position will have the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with professional and nonprofessional health personnel at all organizational levels.
The work involves isolating and defining unknown conditions, resolving critical problems, or developing new theories, major aspects of scientific programs or missions, and portions of broader programs and initiatives impacting research strategy.

This position is located within the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital (JAHVH), Tampa, FL. The incumbent will be an employee of the Tampa VA Research and Education Foundation Inc., a nonprofit corporation partnering with JAHVH in support of VA’s research and education missions.
