What are the responsibilities and job description for the Digital Fabricator position at Taylor Studios, Inc?
Taylor Studios is an exhibit design and fabrication firm producing exhibits and experiences within museums, nature centers, libraries, visitor centers, universities, and all sorts of other facilities across the country. We teach content through interpretation and storytelling, and daily strive to inspire others through our designs.
We are seeking a Digital Fabricator to join our creative, artistic, and fun group of hard-working designers and fabricators. The Digital Fabricator is responsible for bringing 2D designs to life by using a variety of CNC and robotic equipment including a KUKA robotic carving machine, CNC Router, and CNC Plasma. This position requires the candidate to regularly switch between digital and physical tasks daily, from creating and preparing 3D files to operating and maintaining the machines that utilize these files, to building and installing a variety of exhibit components. Some experience with CNC equipment is necessary, but on-the-job training will be provided to familiarize the candidate with our specific machines and software as needed. Qualified candidates will also have general fabrication experience with wood, metals, and/or electronics and help with projects as needed.
Duties include but are not limited to:
· Use a variety of CAD/CAM programs (Fusion 360, VCarve, SprutCAM, EnRoute, Illustrator, etc.) to create, modify, and prepare files for use on machines listed below.
· Safely operate and maintain a variety of machines and tools including:
o 7-axis KUKA KR90 R3100 robotic milling machine
o 3-axis CNC Router
o 3-axis CNC Plasma
· Collaborate with fabricators, Project Supervisors, and Project Managers to work through build challenges and develop efficient fabrication plans that utilize these machines.
· Regularly work with and prepare engineered and extruded materials for use on these machines including: EPS foam, plywood, MDF, acrylic/polycarbonate, HDPE, mild steel, stainless steel, and more.
· Develop and implement safety, usage, and training procedures for these machines and occasionally train others on their usage.
· Read, understand, and build exhibit components and parts from detailed construction drawings using a variety of materials and areas of the shop.
· Work with fabricators and Project Supervisors to safely and effectively pack and load exhibit components onto trucks for installs as needed.
· Effectively communicate ideas, needs, and project status with Project Supervisors and shop management.
· Exhibit proactiveness within the workshop environment.
· Uphold cleanliness and efficiency in the workspace to facilitate safety.
· Consistently produce high-quality work that meets client specifications.
· Carry out other relevant tasks as required.
Requirements:
· High-school diploma.
· Degree in trade or design/engineering-related field of study desired but not required.
· Minimum (1) year experience with CAD/CAM software (Fusion 360, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, MasterCAM, Illustrator, etc.).
· Familiar with standard MS Office software such as Excel, Outlook, etc.
· Minimum (1) year experience operating CNC Router, plasma, or other CNC equipment.
· Proficient with a variety of hand and power tools and able to solve problems in 2D/3D.
· General knowledge of woodworking and metalworking processes and materials.
· Able to quickly and regularly switch between digital and physical tasks within the shop.
· Prepared to travel by car or plane to installation sites within the U.S. and work for up to two weeks on location.
· Able to work overtime, nights, and weekends (only as needed) to deliver projects on deadline.
· Able to lift 50lbs and work around various epoxies, paints, glues, dusts, and other hazardous materials.
· Ability to work in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment.
· Effective communication skills both verbal and written.
Bonus Skills:
· Experience with 5 axis industrial robotic equipment.
· Experience with 3D printers and/or 3D scanners.
· Knowledge and experience using electronics and A/V equipment including microcontrollers, media players, monitors, relay switches, buttons, lights, etc.
· 1 years of woodworking experience.
· 1 years of metalworking experience.
· MIG or TIG welding.
· Physical sculpting and/or scenic work.
· Experience with forklift and moving heavy objects.
