The Onsite IT Support Specialist will be responsible for providing hands-on technical support for the Town of Skowhegan’s IT infrastructure, ensuring the stability, security, and efficiency of network systems, hardware, and software. This role will support the modernization of IT systems, assist with network administration, maintain endpoint services, and provide user support. The specialist will work closely with remote IT management teams and local departments to ensure smooth daily operations and long-term IT improvements.
Key Responsibilities:
Network & Infrastructure Management
- Administer and maintain on-premise firewalls, network switches, and Wi-Fi access points across multiple town facilities.
- Conduct network segmentation to improve security between municipal administration, public safety, and other departments.
- Perform hardware inventory, upgrade recommendations, and structured cabling assessments for long-term IT planning.
- Monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot local area networks (LANs) and assist with ISP service evaluations.
- Ensure proper configuration and documentation of all networking equipment and standards.
Endpoint & User Support
- Provide onsite technical support for municipal staff, troubleshooting PC, printer, and software issues.
- Maintain and support wired and wireless connectivity, emphasizing network reliability for critical departments.
- Assist in deploying and configuring new PCs, laptops, and mobile workstations.
- Conduct IT user training for Office 365 migration and cybersecurity best practices.
- Reset passwords and manage account access under the direction of the IT management team.
Cloud & Server Administration
- Support the transition to a cloud-based domain environment and assist in the migration of on-premise servers.
- Provide onsite oversight during Microsoft Exchange migration from on-premise to a cloud-based Office 365 environment.
- Support the integration of cybersecurity tools, including multi-factor authentication (MFA) and endpoint detection & response (EDR).
- Maintain and document IT systems, ensuring compliance with municipal IT policies and best practices.
Backup & Security Implementation
- Assist in implementing a robust backup and disaster recovery strategy for the town’s IT infrastructure.
- Support Security Incident and Event Monitoring (SIEM) setup and maintain compliance with security protocols.
- Work with town officials to ensure CJIS and HIPAA compliance where applicable.
IT Asset & Vendor Coordination
- Conduct inventory management and documentation of IT assets, ensuring accurate tracking of all hardware and software.
- Coordinate with external vendors for IT procurement, warranty tracking, and managed services oversight.
- Provide IT recommendations and cost analysis for town budget planning.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Required:
- Associate or Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
- Minimum 3 years of experience in IT support, network administration, or systems administration.
- Experience with Windows Server administration, Active Directory, and cloud-based IT environments.
- Proficiency in troubleshooting network infrastructure, firewalls, and switches (Cisco, WatchGuard, or similar).
- Hands-on experience with Microsoft 365 administration, including Exchange, Teams, and OneDrive.
- Familiarity with cybersecurity principles, backup solutions, and incident response strategies.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
- Preferred:
- Certifications such as CompTIA Network , Security , Cisco CCNA, or Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator.
- Experience working with municipal or government IT systems.
- Knowledge of IT governance frameworks, including CJIS and HIPAA compliance.
- Experience implementing MS ISAC or CIS security solutions.
