Role Summary:
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Payroll Specialist II to join a dynamic team for a rewarding 14-week contract position. This is an excellent opportunity for professionals with experience in payroll analysis, timekeeping systems, and HR functions. In this role, you will be responsible for performing critical payroll processing tasks, ensuring accuracy, and working with a variety of systems such as PeopleSoft and Kronos. You will collaborate with internal teams to resolve payroll issues, perform detailed adjustments, and maintain confidentiality while delivering outstanding service. Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform on-line edits and corrections within the PeopleSoft payroll system to ensure accurate payroll processing.

  • Collaborate with programmers and participate in testing to resolve payroll-related issues.

  • Calculate and audit special check requests submitted by departments and HR to ensure proper adjustments.

  • Process internal payroll adjustments by reviewing past payroll data and calculating the correct adjustment amounts.

  • Analyze and perform detailed corrections for exception time report edits in the PeopleSoft system.

  • Review and validate Kronos timekeeping schedules, communicating with department supervisors to resolve discrepancies.

  • Address complex payroll inquiries from employees, management, and HR staff, including union and non-union employees, executives, and physicians.

  • Communicate directly with employees and management to resolve questions related to payroll calculations and deductions.

  • Process garnishment checks, ensuring legal requirements are met and sending the required documents to the appropriate parties.

  • Handle stop payments, voided checks, and reissues in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Manage payroll deductions such as union dues, pharmacy contributions, and vendor sales deductions.

  • Calculate overpayments and process adjustments to recover the necessary amounts from employees' paychecks.

  • Interpret and apply payroll codes, rules, and regulations in the PeopleSoft system to ensure compliance.

  • Work closely with the Payroll Analyst and Accounting team to ensure proper allocations to the general ledger.

  • Handle confidential payroll information with the utmost discretion, ensuring that all data is processed securely and in accordance with company guidelines.

  • Correct “no-time” entries for active employees with missing time records in the master file.

  • Work efficiently under pressure to meet deadlines, with flexibility to accommodate overtime when needed.

  • Perform additional special projects as assigned by management.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required.

  • Payroll certification (FPC or CPP) is preferred.

  • A minimum of two (2) years of related payroll experience is required. Previous experience in a hospital or healthcare setting is highly desirable.

  • Extensive knowledge of PeopleSoft and Kronos payroll and timekeeping systems is essential.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and judgment skills with a high attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.

  • Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.

  • Strong communication and customer service skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders.

  • A team player with a positive attitude and exceptional work ethic.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with union contracts and garnishment processing.

  • HR background and familiarity with payroll transactions and adjustments.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks and make decisions based on urgency and importance.

Location and Work Type:

  • Location: Detroit, MI

  • This position is on-site with a Monday-Friday schedule from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM (flexibility available).

  • This is a 14-week contract position with opportunities for growth and development in the payroll field.
