Senior Power BI/SQL Developer
Location: Ricchmond VA (No relocators or remote workers needed)
Job Type: Contract (6 months, with potential for extension)

Reports To: Chief Operating Officer / Data Officer
Job Summary:
The Virginia Retirement System (VRS) Data Office is seeking up to two (2) Senior Power BI/SQL Developers with strong problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills. This role will support the Data Quality Enhancement initiative and other development efforts, working closely with Business, IT, and stakeholders.
The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with the ability to prioritize, manage workloads efficiently, and deliver high-quality Power BI reports, SQL queries, and data visualizations.
Key Responsibilities:Power BI & Data Visualization:
- Develop, design, and maintain Power BI reports and dashboards based on business requirements.
- Create interactive visualizations, reports, and dashboards to monitor Critical Data Elements.
- Advise on best practices in data visualization and report optimization.
- Work closely with business stakeholders to translate data needs into actionable reports.
- Develop DAX queries to enhance report performance and functionality.
- Provide training and support to end-users on Power BI and SQL tools.
SQL Development & Performance Optimization:
- Develop, optimize, and maintain SQL queries and stored procedures for data retrieval and manipulation.
- Review existing SQL queries, execution plans, partitions, and indexes to enhance performance for long-running queries.
- Provide alternative options for data manipulation techniques, such as replacing Excel-based processes with automated SQL/BI solutions.
- Develop reports to support KPIs and other performance indicators.
Collaboration & Documentation:
- Maintain the confidentiality of all business data and adhere to VRS data security policies.
- Meet all deliverables within the agreed timeframe.
- Provide regular status updates and attend various meetings as required.
- Assist with special projects as directed by the Chief Operating Officer or Data Officer.
Required Skills & Experience:
- 5 years of experience in Power BI report/dashboard development.
- 5 years of hands-on experience in SQL Server development (complex queries, stored procedures, performance tuning).
- Proficiency in writing complex DAX queries.
- Experience with MS SQL Server data modeling and schema design.
- Familiarity with Agile development environments.
- Strong ability to work independently and collaborate with technical and business stakeholders.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
Preferred Skills & Certifications:
- Experience with Pension Benefit Management programs.
- Proficiency in other BI tools (Tableau, QlikView).
- Knowledge of Python or R for data analysis.
- Experience working with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS).
- Microsoft Certified: Data Analyst Associate or equivalent.
- Other relevant certifications in SQL, Data Analysis, or Database Management.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college/university preferred.
- 5 years of experience in technology, data analytics, or related fields.
Contract Details:
- Duration: 6 months (potential extension based on performance and project needs).
- Start Date: Candidate should be available within the next 6 weeks.
- Interview Process: VRS will interview shortlisted candidates before final approval.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $60.00 - $65.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
