What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sr. Laser Development Engineer and Engineering Manager position at Teledyne FLIR?
Provide innovative product and process design/optimization for new laser products and existing product platforms, based on company owned and licensed technologies. Lead schedule driven product development efforts. Support planning and daily management of schedule, cost, and performance requirements for assigned product development efforts. Provide technical support to business development activities and work with and between various business units to achieve product development goals and requirements. In addition, serve as Senior Laser and Optical engineer, conducting design trades and analyses on development projects. Some mechanical engineering skills required, relating to military-grade opto-mechanical systems.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Technical Responsibilities
- Technical leadership in product development efforts.
- Work as a core team member in a multi-disciplinary team including mechanical engineers, electronics engineers, optical designers, and physicists.
- Lead the product development with regards to the laser and opto-mechanical design.
- Apply technology expertise and experience to the design of products to pre-established product performance requirements.
- Manage schedule for development efforts of new laser products or optimization of current products including experimental plan to support timely product release.
- Perform and/or assist laboratory personnel in performing experimental testing and design verification testing during product development.
- Provide technical review for critical suppliers of key processes or parts.
- Support product design reviews and test verification reviews.
- Formulate test methods, protocols, and manufacturing processes as well perform independent experiments to solve manufacturing issues.
2. Business Development Support
- Provide technical support to business development in formulating product concepts, proof of concept, program plans, and technology capability assessment.
- Provide technical briefings and / or inputs to briefings for prospective customers.
- Assist in the writing of technical portions of bid and proposal submissions.
3. Other
- Perform other duties as required/assigned from time to time.
Education and Experience:
- BS, MS or PhD in physics or electronics engineering.
- Minimum of five years, hands on laser design and development experience. Must be able to demonstrate recent ownership of responsibility for a major laser system design.
- Ability and willingness to follow design processes and guidelines including support of technical internal reviews, generation of written documentation for design and proof of concept testing, and generation of product design notes and memoranda for product history files.
- Demonstrated ability to work to demanding schedules and manage risks inherent in specific product development and production transition requirements and schedules.
Specific Desired Competencies:
Engineering Manager Responsibilities:
- Responsible for Project management per New Product Introduction Process
- Oversee Configuration Management System
- Familiar with standard Engineering Change Order Processes
- Develop and mentor product development teams
- Track progress of teams through weekly meetings and discussions
- Familiar with handling of Export Controlled Information as defined by the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), US Department of State.
- Project Scheduling and budgeting
- Conduct performance reviews
Optical Engineering Skills:
- Zemax (ANSYS) OpticStudio optical design software
- Optical design:
- Resonator types and alignment sensitivities for military qualified laser systems
- Laser beam propagation (single mode and multimode systems)
- Beam expansion telescope design (athermal and diffraction limited designs)
Solid State Laser Engineering Skills:
- Extensive experience with 4-level and 3-level solid state laser mediums (Nd:YAG, Er:Glass, etc.)
- Extensive experience with both electro-optic and passive Q-switched laser system design (Lithium Niobate, Cr:YAG, Cobalt Spinel, etc.)
- Experience with laser range finder designs and principles
Mechanical Engineer Skills:
- Utilizing Solidworks CAD system
- Extensive opto-mechanical design for MIL-grade laser systems
- Thermal design
- Document control with Solidworks Enterprise Product Data Management System (EPDM)
