THE POSITION   Under supervision, performs journeyman and supervises skilled maintenance and repair work as related to the HVAC trades; and performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

  Individuals assigned to this position are skilled journeyman refrigeration/mechanical equipment technicians.  Incumbents are expected to work independently and may serve in a lead role for other maintenance workers for specific projects.  The duties listed below are typical for this position, but may not include all these duties.   EXAMPLES OF DUTIES   The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive:
  • Performs skilled mechanical maintenance work in the repair, installation and alteration of refrigeration systems, kitchen equipment large and small and other related equipment and facilities.
  • Fabricates and installs all equipment associated with the Nutrition department.
  • Diagnoses and trouble-shoots controls.
  • Diagnoses and repairs low temperature refrigeration equipment.
  • Installs and operates energy management systems.
  • Performs skilled maintenance work in repair, installation and alteration of related trades.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs cooling towers, chillers, pumps, motors, compressors and coils.
  • Schedules and conducts regular preventative maintenance inspections and repairs.
  • Performs routine safety checks and maintains fluid levels in District vehicles.
  • Coordinates work with contractors, architects, and vendors.
  • Operates vehicles and equipment as necessary to perform the duties of this position.
  • Tests systems for leaks, faults and pressure/charge loss.
  • Performs a variety of other skilled and unskilled tasks as needed.
  • Makes estimates of labor and material costs.
  • Orders materials as needed.
  • Prepares schedules, records and reports as required.
  • Interprets drawings, sketches and blueprints.
  • Participates in District inservice training as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE

Knowledge of:
  • Methods, materials and equipment used in the heating/air conditioning refrigeration, and building trades.
  • Advanced math, work vocabulary and craft skills.
  • Safety procedures and practices relating to the building trades.
  • Applicable laws, codes, ordinances, regulations and assigned work.
  • Basic English usage, writing and math.
  • Hazmat and safety regulations.
  Ability to:
  • Size and design systems for replacement.
  • Proficiently use hand and power tools and shop equipment related to the HVAC/refrigeration industry.
  • Estimate time and materials needed on a wide variety of projects.
  • Determine priorities and schedule work effectively and efficiently.
  • Maintain work pace appropriate to given workload.
  • Drive and operate a variety of vehicles and equipment used in maintenance trades legally and defensively.
  • Perform heavy manual labor and lift heavy items.
  • Prepare and keep work records and make reports.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Speak, read and write English at a level required for satisfactory job performance.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Read and interpret working drawings, plans and blueprints.
  • Work independently and maintain high standards of workmanship.
  • Maintain work schedules in performing tasks.
  • Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance.
  TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade; four (4) years of progressively responsible experience servicing and installing various types of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment (supporting documentation may be required); and/or four (4) years of HVAC or refrigeration journeyman experience; completion of an advanced course in the maintenance of such equipment; or any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities.   WORKING CONDITIONS Environment:
  • Outside environment.
  • Refrigerated or freezing environment.
  • Subject to adverse weather conditions.
  • Driving a vehicle to conduct work.
  • Subject to noise from equipment and tools.
  • Regular exposure to heat, cold, dust, odors, chemicals, pollen and dirt.
  • Ability to work around plants, shrubs and ground covers.
  Physical Abilities:
  • Good physical condition as determined by pre and current employment inquiries and health reports.
  • Possess physical strength and stamina to do strenuous work.
  • Heavy work involving lifting, carrying (up to 50 pounds), pushing and/or pulling of objects (up to 100 pounds).
  • Standing for extended periods of time.
  • Physical dexterity in limbs and finger digits to operate equipment and to perform strenuous manual labor.
  • Bending, grasping, stooping and kneeling.
  • Walking over rough, uneven surfaces.
  • Digging.
  • Climbing ladders.
  • Seeing to perform work.
  • Reaching above shoulders.
  Hazards:
  • Working with machinery having moving parts.
  • Exposure to pollen, chemicals, pesticides and herbicides, gasoline, refrigerant and motor oil.
  • May involve ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, lifts and ramps.
  • Standing and walking for extended periods of time.
