Summary of Position

The Center of Neurovirology and Gene Editing (CNVGE) and the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Inflammation at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University is seeking qualified candidates for the role of tenure track assistant, associate or full professor.  This is an opportunity to participate in a collaborative environment to perform comprehensive research toward understanding the mechanisms of disorders of the central nervous system in order to develop therapeutic strategies against relevant diseases and to provide integrative training to graduate and postgraduate fellows in the field of neurovirology and neuroscience. Areas of research focus include HIV-1 molecular biology, gene editing, CRISPR/Cas9, in vitro and in vivo systems, neuroimmunological disorders associated with viral infections, and the use of animal models for studying disease pathogenesis.  Temple is an urban, research-intensive Carnegie R1 university located in historic and culturally rich Philadelphia, the nation’s 6th largest city. The center has been extremely successful in securing several large grants, center grants, training grants, and equipment grants, and most recently has been awarded the CRISPR for Cure Collaboratory grant, which was awarded via the NIH's Martin Delaney Collaboratory for HIV Cure Research. This grant totals more than $23 million in total costs over the next five years. The center focuses considerable effort into training scientists and is currently funded by a T32 predoctoral training grant from NIH that focuses on neuroHIV training. Members of the center are highly collaborative and have initiated collaboration with clinicians in a variety of areas including neuroHIV and other viral induced CNS diseases, as well as the impact of alcohol and drugs of abuse on disease pathogenesis. The synergistic collaboration between CNVGE and other groups of scientists in the areas of CNS infection will continue to create a vibrant research and educational environment focused on viral induced neurological disorders. The Department of Microbiology, Immunology & Inflammation pursues high-impact basic and translational research to elucidate – and wherever possible, to therapeutically manipulate -- the complex, interwoven processes of disease progression and the inflammatory pathway. In addition, we educate new generations of scientists to tackle these challenges through contemporary transdisciplinary research.  Candidate Qualifications • Ph.D., M.D., D.V.M or equivalent.
