Job Summary
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a crucial role in providing support and assistance to individuals with developmental disabilities or other needs. The DSP's primary responsibilities include helping clients achieve their personal goals, enhancing their overall quality of life, and ensuring their safety and well-being. This role operates under the supervision of the Home Manager or other designated supervisors.
Qualifications and Education
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Completion of all required Department of Developmental Disabilities (DODD) training, including medication administration, delegated nursing, and CPR/First Aid.
Other Requirements
- Reliable transportation is essential.
- Proof of a current and valid driver’s license for the state of residence, to be maintained throughout employment (no more than 4 points on the driver’s license).
- Proof of current vehicle liability insurance, meeting or exceeding the minimum requirements for the state of residence, to be maintained throughout employment.
- Satisfactory results from criminal background checks, including BCI/FBI, Automated Registry Checks (ARCS), and any other required background checks.
Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are typical for this position but may not encompass all responsibilities. Employees may be asked to perform additional tasks based on agency needs.
- Provide support to individuals served by the agency, including but not limited to laundry, dishes, shopping, meal preparation, recreation transportation, personal care, hygiene, bathing support, oral/dental care, restroom assistance, and potentially finance and budgeting.
- Perform physical tasks such as lifting, bending, and assisting with mobility and handle emotional and stressful situations with professionalism and composure.
- Foster positive relationships among individuals served, their peers, and team members.
- Implement and follow individual service plans, behavior plans (if applicable), physician orders, treatment plans (including medication), dietary plans (if applicable), and other plans as directed by the team or healthcare professional.
- Maintain positive, professional, and appropriate communication with families, friends, colleagues, healthcare professionals, and county board staff.
- Complete documentation at the end of each shift into the electronic system, including timesheets, daily notes, goal documentation, medication logs, and behavior plans.
