Position Summary

The role will be responsible for the following:

The Humanities and Fine Arts Department at Chattanooga State Community College is looking for a full-time tenure track Spanish instructor. The ideal candidate will exhibit a passion for educating the College’s increasingly diverse student population. We are searching for a person who will enthusiastically engage students in Spanish language courses and serve as a faculty leader for the department. Successful candidates will be innovative, collaborative, and supportive individuals who demonstrate a sensitivity to diversity, collegiality and excellence in teaching.

Teaching Excellence

  • Develops and updates curriculum for Spanish as needed.
  • Upholds and models professional behavior to include the best scholarly and ethical standards.
  • Works closely with part-time Spanish and language instructors in the department.
  • Maintains collegial, professional and ethical conduct.
  • Submits results into the College’s outcomes and assessments database.
  • Provides effective high-quality instruction using multiple modes of teaching and learning to include online, hybrid, and face- to-face, etc. based on department needs.
  • Teaches a variety of Spanish courses assigned based on department needs, which may include dual enrollment courses.
  • Assists in program and curriculum review, revision, and development.
  • Supports the department and the College by participating in faculty assembly/governance/leadership, committee involvement/service, and faculty development specifically outside of one’s discipline.
  • Maintains accurate academic and professional records and reports in a timely fashion.
  • Shows organized expectations for learning and academic achievement that are clearly documented in each course syllabus and clearly communicates those expectations to students.
  • Integrates a variety of teaching and learning approaches that are designed to respond to the diverse experiences of students in classes and project a positive attitude about each student’s ability to learn.

Holistic Student Support

  • Collaborates with the community about curriculum changes, job opportunities, or scholarship opportunities for students.
  • Remains available, responsive, and approachable while working with advisees and/or students.
  • Creates an academic environment that is open and encouraging to all students.
  • Attends educational offerings that enhance knowledge of diversity and cultural competency.
  • Guides and directs the learning experiences of students through their knowledge, skills, and motivation in the fields of communication and culture.

Organizational Culture and Inclusive Practices

  • Serves on college committees and taskforces to represent foreign language faculty perspectives.
  • Responds to emails from students, colleagues, department chairs, deans, VPs, and the President in a timely and professional fashion.
  • Works in partnership with colleagues and students across campus to identify and address needs/resources that will ensure equity, access, and opportunity for all.
  • Advances the college’s mission, purpose and values of inclusion, well-being, limitless learning, care, transparency, and teaching excellence.

Fiscal Stewardship

  • Submits travel expenses in a timely fashion.
  • Encourages low-cost and/or open teaching resources to mitigate student expenses.
  • Adheres to all relative TBR policies to financial governance.
  • Budgets and forecasts for program using data.

Program Innovation

  • Develops and revises appropriate credit and noncredit program and course curriculum in response to discipline and workforce needs.
  • Researches and incorporates current best practices into second-language acquisition instruction.
  • Engages in ongoing professional development and preparation related to best practices associated with pedagogy, andragogy, and all instructional (including virtual) teaching modalities to address anticipated student and instructional delivery needs.

Knowledge, Skills, Experience And Abilities

  • Demonstrated excellence in language teaching at all levels; ability to teach literature and culture in both Spanish and English; native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English.
  • Commitment to maintain currency in the discipline, including use of advanced technology required in the discipline.
  • Knowledge of American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages ACTFL standards.
  • Strong commitment to professional growth and development, and to the continued innovation and improvement of successful teaching.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with computers and other forms of advanced technology utilized in providing high quality instruction and the understanding and successful use of learning technology.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Spanish, PhD preferred
  • Teaching experience at the community college level, or a mix of secondary, community college and/or university experience.

Projected Salary Range

Instructor: $40,502 - $49,610

Assistant Professor: $45,040 - $56,300

  • Pay will be determined based on experience and education in accordance with the salary guidelines of the Tennessee Board of Regents. To ensure consideration, all relevant work experience must be included in the application.*
