Position Summary
We are seeking a dedicated Food Service Worker / Food Preparation Worker to join our dynamic team at TESCO, Inc. As a key member of our kitchen and service staff, you will be responsible for meal preparation, tray line service, and ensuring the highest standards of food quality and safety. This role is essential to our mission of providing outstanding food service and a positive dining experience.
Key ResponsibilitiesServing Lines / Distribution
- Set up and close down serving lines to ensure availability of menu items from meal opening through closing times.
- Maintain proper food temperatures on serving lines and follow standard cross-panning procedures.
- Serve food in a cafeteria setting or tray line. Portion food items appropriately and read tray tickets or other food service documentation.
- Assemble and pack carryout meal components for pickup.
Food Preparation
- Prepare food using techniques such as cutting, chopping, washing, portioning, slicing, baking, broiling, boiling, and blending.
- Follow standardized recipes and comply with VHA Directive 1439, as well as all local and supervisor-assigned policies and procedures.
- Assist chefs and cooks with various kitchen tasks as needed.
Subsistence and Materials Management
- Receive, inspect, and store food and materials according to FDA Food Code 2022 and VHA standards.
- Verify order accuracy, inspect for quality, label, date, rotate, remove, and store stock properly.
- Monitor inventory levels of food supplies and report shortages.
Sanitation, Cleaning, and Waste Management
- Clear, clean, and sanitize dining room tables, chairs, or benches to ensure availability to customers without delay.
- Replenish dining table items such as napkins, salt, pepper, condiments, etc.
- Properly wash and sanitize all surfaces, utensils, and equipment according to sanitation standards.
- Regularly clean and maintain floors, ensuring no visible dirt, dust, or debris remains, including under furniture or equipment.
- Perform spot cleaning as needed to address food spills and other cleaning issues promptly.
- Collect and remove trash, following VHA recycling guidelines, including segregating unstained recyclable cardboard.
Compliance and Safety
- Adhere to all federal, FDA, VHA, and local policies and procedures to ensure safety and quality standards.
- Participate in required training sessions and continuing education programs.
- Follow all company policies and procedures to maintain a safe and efficient work environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Language Skills: Must be able to conversationally speak, read, and understand basic English to interpret recipes, tray tickets, menus, signage, warning notices, and work instructions, and complete necessary work forms.
- Physical Requirements: Must be in good physical health and capable of performing work that requires light to moderate physical effort, including prolonged standing, walking, and bending. Must be able to frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds unassisted and occasionally lift or move objects weighing more than 50 pounds with the assistance of others. A physical examination is required before starting work.
- Transportation: Must be locally based with reliable transportation.
- Certification: ServSafe® Food Handler Certification is required.
- Experience: Previous experience in food service or a related medical environment is preferred.
- Knowledge: Must have knowledge of food safety and sanitation standards and adhere to all federal, FDA, VHA, and local policies and procedures to ensure safe and quality food service.
- Skills: Strong work ethic, attention to detail, commitment to cleanliness, and exceptional customer service skills. Ability to provide courteous, respectful, and positive interactions with veterans, staff, and visitors.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
- Teamwork: Strong teamwork skills and a willingness to assist others in the kitchen.
Job Details
- Work Schedules: 8.5-hour shifts with a 30-minute unpaid break and a 15-minute paid break.
- Time and Attendance: TESCO utilizes Homebase, a mobile time, attendance, and scheduling system with geo-fencing capabilities to ensure punctuality, accountability, and verification of hours worked for payroll and billing purposes.
- Location: On-site, at TESCO, Inc. locations.
