Position Summary
Provide swimming instruction in a safe environment, insuring adherence to pool rules and regulations.
Essential Duties
Include the following. Other duties may be assigned
- Utilize knowledge and material to provide swimming instruction for various age groups from preschool to adult in accordance with National YMCA guidelines.
- Responsible for the health and safety of all individuals in the pool, i.e. caution regarding unsafe practices and conditions and perform rescue/first aid when necessary. Report accidents and injuries and complete incident reports.
- Report maintenance or safety issues to Aquatics Director.
- Prepare and submit lesson plans and maintain accurate program records for assigned classes.
- Responsible for attending staff meetings/events. Demonstrate and teach the Character Development values of caring, respect, responsibility, and honesty.
- Responsible for arriving prepared for the scheduled class, which includes arriving for duty 15 minutes prior; in proper attire; prepared for constant concentration and visual surveillance of swimmers with no distractions.
- Promote self esteem during class instruction while being an enthusiastic and positive representative of the YMCA.
- Is a member service ambassador, remaining abreast of current programs and facility schedules; being prepared to provide personalized direction to other services.
Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
- High School (GED) preferred
- Minimum of 16 years of age with 6 months experience working with children.
Language Skills:
- Trained and well versed in Listen First, Support Change and Build Community Techniques would be desirable.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, business reports, and procedure manuals as necessary.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence and to speak effectively before members or employees of the Association and the public is required.
- Bilingual ability is a significant asset.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to anticipate, identify and address members needs to ensure safety and enjoyment. To accurately complete all required paperwork. Professionally handle and or get help to resolve conflict. Ability to follow instructions as given by supervisor.
Certifications / Training: (not all are required to apply)
- First Aid and CPR Certificate
- AED Certification
- State Lifeguard Certification
- Child Abuse Prevention
- And working towards:
- YASA- YMCA Aquatic Safety Assisting
- Oxygen Administered Certification
- YMCA Lifeguard Certification
- Aquatic instructor Certification (Required to be obtained within 6 months of hire date)
