Job Description Summary
The Research Specialist IV, under direction, plans and oversees the execution of research projects under the Director of the Institute for Advancing Health Through Agriculture (IHA). The IHA aims to improve human health by leading science-driven solutions in agriculture, nutrition and food systems in a way that supports economic prosperity, environmental sustainability and community well-being. The Research Specialist IV prepares and performs experiments and oversees the laboratory of the Director.
Responsibilities
- Provides scientific expertise in support of the Principal Investigator’s research program. Assists PI with planning and direction of the phases of experiments and procedures.
- Uses foresight and judgment to supervise preparation of upcoming animal studies for the PI. Performs animal surgery procedures and oversees all animal experiments. Maintains paperwork for all animal studies for the PI.
- Evaluates and analyzes data after entered to internal database. Documents results and reports directly to Principal Investigator.
- Oversees daily lab experiments and assign duties to less experienced staff. Trains new lab members and help orient them in new lab procedures and expectations. Works with post-doctoral fellows on their projects and provides problem solving and troubleshooting when needed. May supervise lab staff and student workers, managing their schedules, duties, and tasks. Ensures that procedures are carried out appropriately and issues are addressed.
- Oversees maintenance of lab equipment and overall laboratory environment; maintains files with inventory of equipment, instruments, and chemicals. Oversees ordering supplies and large equipment. Works with outside vendors to ensure pricing and availability of products and equipment.
- Ensures laboratory waste is disposed of according to safety regulations.
- Maintains updated trainings and certifications in laboratory safety procedures and oversees the creation of laboratory manuals.
- Attends and participates in meetings pertaining to laboratory matters.
- Adheres to Federal, State, and Texas A&M University System (TAMUS) procedures, policies, and safety regulations.
- Maintains quality assurance manuals, Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs), validation of laboratory procedures, check sample program, and record control.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Nutritional Sciences or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ten years of related experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
- Knowledge of scientific equipment associated with genetics, microbiology, chemistry, and life sciences.
- Knowledge of proper preparation, handling, and disposal of biologicals, chemicals, and glassware.
- Knowledge of standard laboratory safety procedures.
- Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to ensure understanding.
- Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Other Requirements:
- Ability to exert light force.
- Work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends as needed.
