Job Description Purpose: The Research Engineer I position involves the design and development of custom software solutions (mobile and/or desktop applications, web services, APIs, etc.) to meet customer requirements of the Texas A&M Center for Applied Technology. Specific technical activities include evaluating project requirements to determine the best solution for a problem, designing, implementing, testing, and debugging applications in various programming languages, developing associated software documentation, perform software support and maintenance as needed, and other related duties as assigned. Candidates must be able to work independently as well as part of a team, and write clean, elegant code that maximizes functionality and efficiency. Those who are self-motivated, curious, adaptive, and exercise independent thought and judgment are the primary candidates for this opportunity. Candidates should have a desire to stay abreast of changes in technology as it relates to their work, and must be able to evaluate and identify new technologies to support projects. Responsibilities: Design, develop, test, support, and document software written in various programming languages. (70%) Research and integrate various third-party software frameworks, client-server software architectures, and databases with our internally developed solutions. The individual will integrate all these varying elements into a single seamless product. (20%) Other duties as assigned. (10%) What we need: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. What is helpful: Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science (or other related field) or equivalent experience required. Experience with web development (e.g., HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript, PHP, AJAX, Node.js, Angular, React, Svelte, Symfony, etc.). Experience with web service development/interfacing (e.g., REST, GraphQL, SOAP, WSDL, etc.). Experience with third-party software framework integration (e.g., Eclipse RCP, Apache Hadoop, Kubernetes, commercial cloud computing services, etc.). Experience with database languages (e.g., SQL, NoSQL, etc.). Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Proficiency with software development tools (e.g., Git, VS Code, Jira, Jenkins, etc.). Proficiency in object-oriented programming languages such as Java, Objective-C, Swift, C , etc. Work Location: RELLIS Campus – Bryan, TX.
