SUMMARY:
The Assistant Vice Provost for Academic Affairs reports to the Senior Vice Provost and provides the vision, expertise and leadership across all aspects of student success at East Texas A&M University. This position provides leadership of the Student Success Center and supervises academic coaching, college advising, career preparedness, tutoring, and other key activities centered on cultivating student success. The Assistant Vice Provost also oversees the work of identified retention-related taskforces and committees, develops and facilitates training to help other constituents support students, and works across institutional divisions to improve student outcomes. The Assistant Vice Provost effectively navigates and communicates processes and expectations through programming and coordinates communication and response to student needs across Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Athletics, and other stakeholders.
The university prioritizes a student ready approach, with improvement of retention and graduation rates. In a student-ready university, the emphasis is on the institution to adapt to student needs rather than expecting students to fit an identified mold or criteria. Focus is on each student’s potential, coming from a clear strength-based model. Through a student-ready lens, the Assistant Vice Provost will work with stakeholders to develop, direct, and assess a vision for student success, along with implementation of initiatives and services designed to increase persistence, academic goal completion, and graduation rates of students.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight for all Student Success Center programs and services.
  • Prepare and oversee the budget, allocating resources in accordance with strategic and operational objectives to effectively support student needs.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Student Success Center, including supervision and development of the staff and functions of the Student Success Center and working closely with the Writing Center and Math lab.
  • Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of professional staff, fostering a environment of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement. This includes evaluating the performance of Center for Student Success personnel.
  • Develop new ideas, initiatives, and interventions that enhance student success.
  • Serve on various university committees and participate in working groups related to student success and other related areas.
  • Coordinate a comprehensive offering of student-facing programs that include academic coaching, tutoring, career preparedness, supplemental instruction, group study sessions, and other academic support workshop options for students that represent a array of courses and levels.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to determine short- and long-term strategies for student success.
  • Seek opportunity for cross-functional teamwork in the Student Success Center (to include Honors College, Career Preparedness, Title III, and the Money Management Center) and across-the-institution with TRIO Programs, Athletics, and Student Affairs.
  • Analyze and evaluate data on students who are not retained. Produce reports with assessment about reasons for departure and provide recommendations for addressing gaps in student experience.
  • Develop, in conjunction with stakeholders, academic support resources for students to be included in academic workshops, distributed to faculty, and offered in courses and create electronic/web resources for students.
  • Report, track, and assess the effectiveness of the academic support programs.
  • Maintain a collaborative relationship with campus offices (e.g., Office of International Programs, Financial Aid, etc.)
  • Represent the Student Success Center at functions, meetings, open houses, admission events, orientations, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Education: Doctorate (or ABD with identified completion date).
  • Experience: At least five (5) years of experience of working on a college/university campus with preference for experience at the Director or Department Head level. Experience in developing, implementing, and assessing strategic goals, objectives, and outcomes. Experience in supervision/administrative role.
  • Knowledge / Skills: Ability to build solid and healthy relationships with students, faculty, and staff. Knowledge of student development theory, best practices in retention programming, and current trends in higher education. Demonstrated problem-solving ability with high student/customer service in addressing student and faculty issues or concerns. Knowledge of academic support processes and functions. Commitment to supporting the needs of all students. Ability to multitask and find creative solutions in a supervisory and autonomous environment.Strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Computer skills, including Microsoft Office programs and learning management systems such as D2L. Strong oral and written communication skills needed to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, parents, and administrators.Excellent leadership and supervisory skills.Demonstrate tact, a positive attitude, courtesy, and discretion in dealing with administrators, faculty, staff, students, and the public. Work independently as well as function effectively in a team. Adaptability, flexibility, and a willingness to work in an innovative and rapidly changing environment.

PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:
  • Collaborative individual working with faculty and staff from a variety divisions.
  • Understanding of academic processes, policies, and procedures.
  • Experience working directly with students, either in the classroom, academic support, or co-curricular activities.
  • Demonstrated advising skills and understanding of advising best practices.
  • A proven track record of developing and implementing successful student retention, student support, and/or student success initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience in data analysis and assessment methodologies.
  • Understanding of athletic-eligibility processes and ability to collaborate with Athletics.
  • Demonstrated experience in collaborative strategic planning and project management.
  • Experience in staff supervision, including training, scheduling, and performance management.
