SUMMARY:
The Fire Protection Coordinator at East Texas A&M University (ETAMU) is responsible for leading inspections, data collection, and the documentation of findings for one or more fire and life safety systems and equipment. This includes, but is not limited to, fire extinguishers, fire hydrants, fire doors, shutters, curtains, and related systems. The position requires advanced knowledge and skills to support campus fire & life safety programs while ensuring compliance with applicable codes and regulations.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead and manage inspections of multiple fire and life safety systems or equipment types, ensuring compliance with safety standards.
- Develop and maintain schedules for fire and life safety system inspections, coordinating with internal teams and external vendors as needed.
- Lead documentation and analysis of flow tests for campus fire hydrants and update databases to ensure accurate reporting.
- Provide comprehensive flow test data and conduct new tests as required for new construction or renovation projects, working closely with project teams.
- Assist construction teams and departments with relevant fire and life safety data, offering expert advice when necessary.
- Oversee inventory management for fire hydrants, fire extinguishers, sprinkler systems, fire alarms, doors, shutters, curtains, and other fire-related equipment, ensuring proper documentation and updates to databases.
- Perform and document inspections, testing, and maintenance of fire doors, shutters, curtains, and other related safety features.
- Identify non-compliant systems and take appropriate steps for resolution, submitting work requests as needed for maintenance items outside of regular scope.
- Conduct re-inspections and follow-up actions to ensure all systems are fully compliant with safety standards.
- Respond promptly to fire alarm and fire sprinkler issues, including handling situations after regular business hours, on nights, and weekends as required.
- Lead and assist in evacuation drills for campus buildings, ensuring all departments are prepared for emergencies.
- Provide training on fire and life safety systems for the campus community, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and procedures.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive evacuation plans for all university buildings, updating as necessary to meet regulatory requirements.
- Troubleshoot and manage the repair of fire alarm and sprinkler systems, ensuring minimal downtime and compliance with safety codes.
- Investigate fire incidents as necessary, providing detailed reports and recommendations for improving safety systems.
- Lead inspections and audits for departmental and campus projects, ensuring fire and life safety standards are met at all stages.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience / Knowledge / Skills: Two years of related experience. Basic knowledge and understanding of fire system inspections and repairs. Understanding/reading building prints. Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications. Interpersonal and communication skills. Planning and organizational skills. Strong verbal and written communications skills. Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to: Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to ensure understanding. Ability to adapt and learn quickly, work autonomously, approach tasks with a sense of urgency, and address any issues that arise day or night.
- Licensing/Professional Certifications: Valid Driver’s license.
- Physical Requirements: Be able to climb ladders.
- Other Requirements:
PREFERRED EDUCATION/ SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:
- Preferred Education: Bachelor’s degree in fire science, engineering, or other related field.
- Preferred Certifications: TCFP Fire Inspector, TCFP Plans Examiner, NFPA CFAITMS. Ability to obtain TCFP Fire Inspector within one year of employment.
