GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Performs complex (journey-level) technical and administrative work processing workers’ compensation claims submitted by Department employees, completes documentation associated with claims, consults agency management regarding workers’ compensation processes and State Office of Risk Management (SORM) deadlines, advises employees of their rights and responsibilities under the Workers’ Compensation Act, reviews claim files for accuracy, processes appeals through the Workers’ Compensation System, and coordinates fraud investigations involving workers’ compensation cases. Work is performed under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment within the limits of applicable statutes, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Receives, logs, records, processes, and routes Department employees’ workers’ compensation claims to the State Office of Risk Management (SORM) for resolution.
- Ensures supervisors and employees complete the appropriate forms associated with on-the-job injuries both correctly and in a timely matter
- Advises employees of their rights and responsibilities under state law and the Texas Department of Public Safety policies.
- Coordinates, provides assistance, and answers questions regarding the claims process and overall departmental leave policies as they relate to workers’ compensation issues.
- Composes correspondence to communicate with claimants, the SORM, and other parties relevant to active claims.
- Monitors the workers compensation claims to ensure proper handling of claims being done by SORM as well as the Department.
- Acts as an intermediary between SORM and the Department concerning workers’ compensation claims and their processing.
- Resolves problems and complex claims issues related to workers’ compensation and consults with the supervisor and legal staff concerning claims.
- Completes reports regarding workers’ compensation claimants as requested
- Prepares training materials and copies to provide various formal and informal workers’ compensation training classes on procedures and processes.
- Maintains accurate, detailed and current notes, information, and documentation on all workers’ compensation claims files.
- May enter claims processing data into automated records systems.
- Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS:
Education – Graduation from a standard senior High School with a High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience – Experience processing workers’ compensation claims in Texas.
Licensure and/or Certification – If driving is required, must possess a valid driver license from state of residence.
Regulatory knowledge – Working knowledge of, or the ability to rapidly assimilate information related to TXDPS, State and Federal regulations, legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures.
Supervisory/Managerial/Leadership skills – Knowledge of management/supervisory methods and principles, performance/productivity standards, and fiscal/budget management. Ability to develop plans, policies, and procedures for efficient workflow and overall effectiveness. Ability to provide clear direction to others, promote teamwork and motivate others to accomplish goals.
Technology – Proficiency with Microsoft Office and appropriate levels of proficiency with utilized software and systems (e.g. CAPPS, SharePoint) and be able to learn new software/systems.
Interpersonal Skills – Must demonstrate an ability to exercise poise, tact, diplomacy and an ability to establish and maintain positive, working/professional relationships with internal/external customers. Must demonstrate DPS’ core values: Integrity, Excellence, Accountability, and Teamwork.

A DPS employee who is selected for a position in the same salary group and state title as their current position will be transferred with no salary change.
A DPS employee who is selected for a position in their current salary group with a new state title may receive an increase of no more than 3.4% over their current salary regardless of posted salary.
Salary is contingent upon qualifications and is subject to salary administration and budgetary restrictions.
