The Texas General Land Office is seeking a Document Services Technician (Scanning Specialist) within the Heritage/Archives & Records Department of the agency.

The Scanning Specialist performs electronic document imaging and printing services work, involving operating and maintaining digital imaging equipment and software, scanners, reproduction and bindery equipment; and scheduling and completing print orders and other duplication services.

What Your Contributions To The GLO Will Be

  • Provide excellent customer service. Research information to solve customer service problems. Interprets and explains rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Prepares, interprets, and disseminates information concerning agency programs and procedures, and assists coworkers in providing high-quality products and excellent customer service.
  • Analyzes and evaluates documents to be digitized to determine their condition and the production process by which they can be scanned.
  • Inspects scan jobs to ensure adherence to standards, QCing (quality control) to crop, rotate, and deskew the digital images before creating the derivative image, a PDF or TIFF, and saving to the I:/ drive and posting to the GLO's web page.
  • Using Abobe Photoshop color corrects digital images of scanned documents and maps to remove dirt, stitch lines, and ensure the colors on the image are equal to or match the colors on the original documents and maps, and stitch together two or more digital images when the need arises.
  • Schedules print orders from orders received in the online Map Store and in-person customer orders, ensuring printed items are flawless, trimmed, rolled, tubed, and delivered to the Office of Veterans Records (OVR) to be shipped out via FedEx or delivered by research staff to in-person external customers visiting the office, all requests are completed within 24 - 24 hours of receipt.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university, generally preferred with major course work in history and archives relevant to the assignment. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.
  • Experience in document imaging and printing services work, involving operating and maintaining digital imaging equipment and software, scanners, reproduction equipment, and plotters; and scheduling and completing print orders and other duplication services, providing high-quality customer service.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of various types of scanning equipment, Adobe PhotoShop, and various software programs.
  • Ability to handle archival materials dating back to the 1720s.
  • Ability to edit digital images, color correct digital images of scanned maps and documents to remove dirt and stitch lines, and ensure colors on the images are equal to or match the colors on the originals.
  • Ability to stitch two or more digital images together using Adobe PhotoShop and OCR documents through Optical Character Recognition software.
  • Ability to move and transport records, documents, and boxes, weighing up to 30 pounds and may remain standing, sitting and/or in sedentary positions in the workplace.
  • Ability to read cursive writing, differentiate between colors on a color chart, and scanning experience.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the employee to primarily perform sedentary office work; however, mobility (moving around the worksite) is routinely required to carry out some duties. This position requires extensive computer, telephone and client/ customer contact and communication. It requires the ability to move and position oneself as needed for filing and similar routine office duties. The job also requires normal cognitive abilities requiring the ability to learn, recall, and apply certain practices and policies. It requires the stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions. Ability to read printed materials and computer screens. The individual must be able to move and transport records, documents, boxes, and all related information and materials, weighing up to 20 pounds when required.
