TPWD MISSION

To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

International degrees must be accompanied with an evaluation of the comparable academic qualification. General Description

Under the direction of the Ecosystem Leader, the Fisheries Management internship position will perform routine fish and wildlife conservation work including assisting in the collection, recording, and editing of fishery-dependent and fishery-independent data in the San Antonio Bay ecosystem. Operates equipment safely under the supervision of trained staff. Maintains gear, equipment, and facility. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Perform additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.

Fieldwork in San Antonio Bay and near shore Gulf of Mexico includes fishery independent sampling using bag seines, trawls, oyster dredges as well as potentially other fishery sampling gears. Sampling will be done aboard skiffs and our research vessel. Fishery dependent data is collected at area boat ramps. Daily routine often depends on weather and may include work days longer than 8 hours, but will not exceed 40 hours in a week.

This position is fieldwork intensive. A bunkhouse is available on site in Port O'Connor. A personal vehicle and driver's license is needed in case of emergencies or to gather personal supplies (groceries etc) since Port O'Connor is very remote.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university or recent graduate within the last 6 months;

Minimum of 18 completed semester credit hours from an accredited college or university at time of application;

Must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 grade point scale or "Pass" on a Pass/Fail system.

Applicant must possess a valid State driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

Education

Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university pursuing a degree relevant to the position; examples are majors in Marine Biology/Marine Science, Fisheries Biology, Biology, Wildlife and Fisheries Science, Oceanography, Environmental Science, and Natural Resource Management.

Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Required to work 40 hours per week, includes flexible schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays;

Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules, and safety procedures;

Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;

Required to perform work with proper safety precautions and equipment in enclosed spaces, heights, noise, dust and fumes;

Bunkhouse is available on site in Port O'Connor;

Required to perform manual labor, including lifting equipment and materials up to 50 lbs.;

Required to travel 5% with possible overnight stays;

Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
