General Description: Serves as a vital member of the Veteran Entrepreneur team responsible for providing counseling, technical assistance, and training to Veterans and family members interested in starting their own business or to veterans and family members already in business. The Veteran Business Consultant will provide 1:1 consulting on various subjects, including business plan development, financials, marketing strategies, entity formation, capital acquisition, and government contracting. The Consultant also connects veterans and family members with partner resources for specific needs such as Tax and Legal guidance, Franchising, Copyright and Trademarks, and Manufacturing. Work involves outreach, coordinating, and advocating for business opportunities and other programs and services for veterans and their families. The Consultant will travel throughout the assigned region and Texas.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provides effective entrepreneur and business management consulting support to veteran clients in various situations and environments.
  • Identifies and apprises prospective business support resources available.
  • Performs research related to specific business-related information requests.
  • Develop relationships with business support-related resources throughout assigned regions in Texas.
  • Process Veteran Verification Letters and Veteran-Owned Business Logos.
  • Works with veteran entrepreneurs and veteran business owners to benchmark status and monitor key performance indicators.
  • Provides business consulting support as needed.
  • Conducts business training classes and information seminars.
  • Attend and participate in local, state, and federal meetings and training sessions specific to the Veterans Entrepreneur Program.
  • Works with other TVC programs and collaborates with other local, state, and federal agencies and entities to assist veterans and their families.
  • Develops and maintains the Veteran Entrepreneur database.
  • Work hours other than 7:30 am – 4:30 pm will be required for work-related functions.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in business administration, management, entrepreneurship, finance, accounting, or a related field. Experience may be substituted for education on a year-by-year basis. College Transcripts are required and must be provided before an interview can be extended, it is preferred they be attached to the application.

Minimum Experience:

  • Four (4) years related experience developing content and slide presentations, coordinating and delivering public speaking engagements to large audiences, and
  • Four (4) years of experience in business financials, marketing, or business ownership, and

Additional Requirements:
  • A valid Texas Driver's License must be provided within 90 days of hire.
  • Complete a Business Consultant Certification within six months from the date of hire.
  • The candidate must reside within 50 miles of Houston.
  • Honorably discharged Veteran

Applicants must be a Veteran who served on active duty for a period of more than 180 days and was discharged/released with other than dishonorable discharge; OR a Veteran who was discharged/released from active duty because of a service-connected disability. To demonstrate qualification, a DD form 214 (member 1 copy not acceptable), NA Form 13038, or a VA Summary Benefits Letter must be attached to the application or provided prior to an interview being extended.

Preferred Experience and Qualification:
  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in business administration, management, entrepreneurship, finance, accounting, or a related field.
  • Previous business operations or sales consulting experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to carefully listen to and demonstrate patience with veteran entrepreneurs.
  • Ability to work independently and on a team to meet various deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership, strategic vision, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas succinctly both orally and in writing to individuals and large audiences.
  • Ability to perform advanced computer skills, including conducting internet research, operating Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and other PC-based programs.
  • Customer Resource Management experience (Salesforce, Siebel/Oracle, MS Dynamics, etc.).
  • Ability to perform case management.
  • Excellent project management skills, including managing multiple projects with critical time frames.
  • Ability to demonstrate expertise in the Veterans Preference registration process at the state and federal levels.
  • Knowledge of current business trends, including local, state, and federal programs, incentives, and partnerships.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective public contacts.
  • Ability to gather, assemble, correlate, and analyze business-related facts, and devise solutions to business problems.
  • Ability to prepare concise reports, training curricula, and presentations.

Environmental & Physical Conditions:
Normal office work environment, mostly sedentary in nature. May involve walking; standing; remaining stationary for long periods of time; pulling and pushing; kneeling, stooping, and bending; and safely lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30 pounds. Work involves extensive telephone usage and repetitive hand/wrist/finger motions while using the computer.
