Position Description:
Seasonal Visitor Center Assistants work with our Visitor Center Manager to carry out the day-to-day operations of the Arboretum’s visitor center. This position provides ample experience in all the areas listed below including customer service, cash reports, point of sale entry and handling of funds. We are seeking individuals who are accurate and efficient in financial details, enjoys interacting with the public and has a passion for nature. As the first contact for visitors and other guests, Arboretum attire and dress code must be observed. On the job training will occur for candidates selected for this position.
Applicants must be capable of traveling to and from the work location. The Arboretum is located 4 miles south of Route 66 on Woody Mountain Road in Flagstaff, AZ. Woody Mountain Road is an unmaintained Forest Service dirt road on which you can expect to encounter pot holes, rocks, and slick, muddy, icy, or snowy conditions. Extreme weather may degrade road conditions and present challenging driving conditions.
Schedule:
The schedule of this seasonal position is as follows. Please note that the schedule can fluctuate based on the needs of the Visitor Center Manager and the Arboretum’s schedule of events.
- Two positions are available starting April 30th and ending by October 26th.
- Assistants works 8-20 hours per week with additional hours for events as needed.
- Assistants work Wednesday thru Sundays. The Arboretum is closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
- Shifts may be 4-8 hours between the hours of 8:30 am – 4:30 pm
- Weekends and special events (evenings) required.
Financial Aspect:
- Accepts monetary transactions for memberships, donations, and events.
- Is proficient with accepting, counting cash as well as making change.
- Accurately and consistently enters transactions into the POS system.
- Diligently documents customers on appropriate will call lists for events.
- Completes end of the day Cash Report and closure with accuracy and efficiency.
- Minimal errors in recording transactions.
- Asks for help as needed.
Admissions Counter:
- Greets and welcomes guests and provides information including map of grounds, art exhibits, pricing, schedules, and activities.
- Promotes the benefit of becoming a member and is knowledgeable about the Reciprocal Admissions Program
- Completes ticket sales and membership purchases.
- Maintains records of visitation.
Gift Shop Sales:
- Acts as the cashier for admissions and sales of merchandise by cash and charge transactions.
- Ideally able to troubleshoot mathematical errors.
- Stocks merchandise as needed.
- Stocks brochure racks in Visitor Center and Exhibit Room.
- Prints additional pamphlets, brochures and flyers as needed.
- Works with the custodian to ensure cleanliness of Visitor Center and Exhibit Room.
- Sweeps and dusts as necessary.
- Sweeps the entrance walkway and back courtyard before opening.
Information Services:
- Serves as receptionist for incoming calls to The Arboretum.
- Provides information to potential visitors including directions, schedules, special events, classes, admission prices, seasonal plant displays, facility rentals, memorial benches, etc.
- Directs calls to other staff as needed.
- Serves as an initial point of contact for on-site visitors, vendors, volunteers, etc. doing business with staff.
Other Duties:
- Supervises volunteers
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Minimum one-year related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Excellent customer service skills is a must.
- Knowledge of computer-based retail systems.
- Knowledge of Gmail, Google docs, sheets & calendar, Excel, and POS devices.
- Ability to provide polite, courteous, and pleasant interactions with all visitors.
- One-year retail cash handling experience preferred.
- Must be able to work independently and as a team member, handling multiple and changing priorities.

Compensation: $17.00-$18.00/per hour
