What are the responsibilities and job description for the Behavior Intervention Specialist position at The Arc of Rensselaer County?
The Arc of Rensselaer County is seeking a dedicated Behaviorist to work with individuals, support teams, and a psychologist to assess, diagnose, and treat behaviors that impact intellectual, social, and emotional development, as well as the establishment of a meaningful social role. This role plays a key part in enhancing the quality of life for individuals served by addressing behavioral challenges.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including psychologists, to identify and evaluate behavioral concerns.
- Develop and implement individualized behavior plans that promote positive social and emotional development.
- Provide ongoing assessment and treatment to ensure progress in achieving personal goals and a valued social role.
- Uphold agency values and adhere to the guidelines set forth in Part 633.16 of the OPWDD operating standards.

Behavior Intervention Specialist I:
Option A: A National Board certification in behavior analysis BCBA and a Master’s degree in behavior analysis, or a field closely related to clinical or community psychology that is approved by OPWDD; or
Option B: A Master’s degree in a clinical or treatment field of psychology, social work, school psychology as it relates to human development or clinical intervention or a related human service field; or
A New York State license in mental health counseling (LMHC); and have or obtain OPWDD-approved specialized training or experience in functional assessment techniques and behavior support plan development
Option C: A Bachelor’s degree in a human service field; and
Have provided behavioral services for an agency in the OPWDD system as of, and continuously since, December 31, 2012; and
Is actively working toward a Master’s degree in an applied area of psychology, social work, or special education; or
Option D: Completing at least one graduate level course in an applied health service area of applied psychology, social work, or special education each year
Behavior Intervention Specialist II :
Option A: At least a Master’s degree from a program in a clinical or treatment field of psychology, social work, school psychology, or applied psychology as it relates to human development and clinical interventions, and documented training in assessment techniques and behavior support plan development; or A National Board certification in behavior analysis (BCBA) and a Master’s degree in a field closely related to clinical or community psychology that is approved by OPWDD; or
Option B: A New York State License in mental health counseling (LMHC)
A National Board certification in behavior analysis (BCBA) and a Master’s degree in behavior analysis; or
Option C: Five (5) years’ experience working directly with individuals with developmental disabilities, including the development, implementation and monitoring of behavior support plans; or
Option D: Five (5) years’ experience providing supervision and training to others in the implementation of behavior support plans
ADDITIONAL MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
NYS driver’s license that meets agency guidelines
Reliable Transportation
