The Arc Wayne of Newark, NY, a Human Services Agency, is hiring immediately entry-level full-time, part-time, and per diem/relief Residential Direct Support Professionals (DSP) to support adults with developmental disabilities in obtaining life goals. The role of the DSP is to teach, encourage, care, inspire, mentor, influence, instruct, nurture, and praise the individuals that you support. As a Residential Direct Support Professional (DSP) you will earn competitive pay of $17.44 per hour for scheduled positions or $22.64 per hour (only in select scheduled positions) or $16.94 per hour for non-drivers.
Residential Direct Support Professional ( DSP ) Responsibilities:
- Plans and supports individual's daily activities that they choose and are meaningful to them which may include, but not limited to: household tasks, recreational activities, learning activities, physical fitness activities, development of individual interests and money management.
- Assists individuals in maintaining safe and healthy lifestyles. Provides assistance in making healthy dietary choices and following pre-established orders by medical professionals. May provide assistance with eating.
- May provide direct personal support with bathroom responsibilities such as, but not limited to: shaving, brushing teeth, bathing/showering, using the bathroom and dressing.
- Monitors and maintains a clean, safe and secure environment for individuals at all times.
- Participates in building evacuation and fire drills.
- Reviews, understands and follows each individual's plan of protective oversight and individual service plan. Provides active input in the development of individual service plans as a member of the PCP team.
- Provides Residential Habilitation services according to each individuals plan. Accurately documents service provisions in a timely manner according to The Arc Wayne policies and procedures and OPWDD and Medicaid standards.
- Review the staff communication logs prior to the beginning of each shift. Stays current with all pertinent information regarding all individuals supported.
- Administers and charts medications accurately and in accordance with medication administration guidelines and individual care plans. Performs related medication recordkeeping, acquisition, storage and medication counts.
- Monitors for changes in general health, behavior appearance and patterns of activities and follows reporting procedures for any changes.
- Provides positive behavior support and role modeling to the people we support. Maintains a positive relationship with individuals' family members and/or guardians.
- Provides emergency and first aid treatment when necessary until relieved by a professional medical person or other designated person.
- Schedules, transports and records medical, dental and other necessary appointments as well as other community activities.
- Prevents, recognizes and reports abuse toward the people we support.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding information about the individuals we support.
- Ensures that conduct while on duty is professional and consistent with the Agency's culture, mission, values, procedures and policies.
- Adheres to the Code of Ethics and Core Competencies for Direct Support Professionals,
- Successfully completed the required, ongoing training requirements.
- Completes all other duties as assigned.

Residential Direct Support Professionals ( DSP ) Minimum Qualifications:
- No previous experience required
- All Residential Direct Support Professionals must be 18 years of age
- Valid New York State driver's license preferred
- Basic computer literacy including use of email, internet and web-based programs.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operations and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write reports.
- Ability to physically assist individuals who use wheelchairs and/or walkers
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Must be able to alternate between sitting, standing, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling, twisting and crawling on a frequent basis throughout the day. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. on an occasional to frequent basis. Must be able to read, write and communicate with adults on a frequent basis. Must possess sight and hearing within a normal range (with or without corrective devices). May be required to support individuals with personal care including toileting and showering. May be exposed to excessive cold or heat. May be required to work both indoors and outdoors. May be exposed to blood borne pathogens, excessive noise, and cleaning chemicals.
Schedule: Full time, part time and relief opportunities available. Flexible schedules.
Status: Non-Exempt
We are hiring immediately for entry-level candidates with any background. Experience as caregivers, human services, direct care workers, childcare, Home Health Aide or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is a plus! DSP Overnight, Evening, and Daytime shifts available.
