Principal Project Engineer

Location: San Diego, CA

Job Type: Full-time, Professional

Salary Range: $57.00 - $72.00 Hourly

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Project Engineer to join our dynamic team in San Diego, CA. In this role, you will have the opportunity to lead and manage multi-disciplinary teams on impactful, landmark projects within the San Diego region. As a key member of our engineering team, you will play an integral part in delivering innovative solutions that shape the future of the community. This position offers the chance to collaborate with industry experts while contributing to the successful completion of high-profile projects.

Key Responsibilities:

Management Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and mentor a team of technical staff, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest standards.
  • Manage construction documents, contracts, and schedules, ensuring all deliverables are met.
  • Oversee project coordination in the field, providing construction support and addressing issues as they arise.
  • Prepare contracts, fee proposals, and scopes of work for new projects.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for clients, public-agency personnel, and in-house teams, building strong, positive relationships.
  • Lead and manage design and support staff, ensuring effective collaboration and project execution.

Technical Responsibilities:

  • Conduct conceptual and preliminary engineering design studies, incorporating land use, zoning considerations, site constraints, and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare and process regulatory plans and public improvement plans for both private and public projects.
  • Perform constructability reviews and provide technical expertise on a range of construction support services.
  • Ensure all work complies with jurisdictional codes, standards, and procedures, with a strong emphasis on California and regional requirements.
  • Utilize AutoCAD/Civil 3D to prepare exhibits, studies, and final plans.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (BSCE).
  • Certification: California Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer (or ability to obtain within the next 6 months).
  • Experience: Minimum of 8-12 years of relevant experience in civil engineering or equivalent work experience of 12-15 years in the industry.
  • Leadership: A minimum of 3 years of management experience, including supervising technical staff and leading projects.
  • Technical Expertise:
  • Strong knowledge of engineering principles and techniques for civil engineering design.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D software.
  • Familiarity with regulatory plans, public improvement plans, and constructability reviews.
  • Knowledge of jurisdictional codes, standards, and procedures in California is highly preferred.
  • Experience with project management, including budgeting, scheduling, and client interactions.

Additional Skills:

  • Excellent leadership and supervisory skills, with a demonstrated ability to make independent decisions and manage projects effectively.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with clients, team members, and public agencies.
  • Proven ability to manage resources and project schedules to meet deadlines and project goals.
  • Strong negotiation skills and the ability to manage and resolve conflicts effectively.
  • Ability to perform at a high level under pressure while maintaining a focus on quality and client satisfaction.
