Welcome to The Artisan's Bench, a place where art meets function and handcrafted is the standard. We are looking for a full-time Store Manager to join our effort and belief in supporting artisan creativity and the importance of shopping locally. We are a small and dedicated team, success in this role requires a Store Manager with strong communication skills, both when receiving and providing feedback. This individual must thrive on collaboration and possess strong trouble-shooting and problem solving abilities.
The Store Manager will be responsible for oversight and execution of all business operations and running the day-to-day of the store. These tasks will include executing sales in-store and online, assuming responsibility for operations, human resource and inventory duties within a retail setting. Though the shop is open 5 days a week, the Store Manager will have responsibilities outside of the hours the store is open. This individual will work alongside the owner to support a small team to ensure smooth daily operations.
General Sales Duties The following tasks are intended as a general description and are not intended in any way to limit other duties which may be assigned.
- Provide exemplary customer service in store and online, including but not limited to:
- Welcome customers, both in person and on the phone. We carry high end items and are known for providing exceptional customer service
- Answer questions and offer suggestions. Customers come to us for ideas, inspiration, and assistance making selections
- Complete sales using a computer point-of-sale system
- Wrap fragile and delicate items for shipping and carryout from store
- Work with customers placing online orders as needed. Assist Web Manager as needed with posting and attending to online sales.
- Support sales of area rugs as needed
- Assist team with maintaining store appearance
- Ensure closing lists are done daily
- Maintain cleanliness and tidiness of the shop, front and back of house
- Break down boxes and clear packing materials
- Visual merchandising and restocking
Manage Inventory This position has the lead responsibility for creating stock entries, maintaining, and reporting on inventory to support sales and ordering. Accuracy and attention to detail is extremely important.
- Use various software programs (Lightspeed, Excel, Shopify) to closely follow inventory procedures and gather needed information to inform restock and purchasing processes
- Enter new products into the system
- Closely follow protocols of item descriptions, vendor details and product specifications in system to ensure consistency
- Review and update existing product information as needed
- Create Purchase Orders (PO) for incoming orders in the Point of Sale system
- When orders arrive, receive, unbox and inspect incoming items
- Review packing invoices to ensure incoming items match PO
- Tag items, arrange on display shelves
- Organize extra merchandise in back stock storage, create systems so product can be easily identified and retrieved for restock
- Work with other store managers to update and ensure accurate pricing both in store and online
- Conduct physical inventory quarterly
- Communicate with artists and vendors when product is damaged or there are issues with orders
Operations These duties support the backend management of the store and are a requirement of this position.
- Create Reports
- Gather various types of data to regularly create reports related to sales, inventory and other metrics to assist owner with ordering and store operation
- Document and regularly track donations and loss reporting for tax purposes
- Gather and submit sales, shipping and other information for accounting. Submit this information monthly to accountants.
- Process payroll and submit information to timekeepers regularly.
- Co-create store policies (handbook), systems and procedures
- Ensure staff adherence to policies
HR Responsibilities and Management The Store Manager will assist with all aspects of HR including interviewing, training, managing and terminating staff. Specific duties include
- Assist with screening and interviewing prospective employees
- Co-create staff handbook and ensure adherence to policies
- Manage all support staff including onboarding and training, providing feedback and support to correct staff performance as needed
- Monitor daily workflows, assign tasks and manage team to complete lists as needed
Additional Tasks This Store Manager will be expected to open and close the store as needed after a preliminary training period.
Additional Information
This is an at-will, full time salaried position (45 hours per week, more hours required during holiday season). The store is open Tuesday - Saturday, working Saturdays is mandatory.
Additional benefits: 7 days of paid sick time per calendar year. 7 days of paid vacation per calendar year after 90 days. Blackout days apply. This time does not rollover and is renewed each calendar year.
You will receive an additional 5 paid days off (December 25, normal work days December 27-January 1) when the store is closed post holidays. This policy is subject to change.
Bonuses available at the end of every year, amount dependent on store sales and merit.
