Primary School Library Assistant – Immediate Opening

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Primary School Library Assistant supports the work of the Librarian in meeting students’ needs for care and supervision and by assisting in the circulation and maintenance of library resources. This position ensures a welcoming, organized, clean, and efficient library environment to foster a love for reading and learning among elementary-aged students. This position is full-time, hourly, non-exempt.
REPORTS TO: The Head of Lower School
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High School Degree (or its foreign equivalent)
- Strong communication skills in English (verbal and written)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate or bachelor’s Degree
- International and/or independent school experience
- Some formal training or experience in Library Science and/or Education
- Bilingual (or highly proficient) in French/Spanish
The ideal candidate should meet the following criteria:
- Possess a high level of digital literacy and ability to manage diverse technological tools, devices and applications.
- Exercise flexibility, initiative, and good judgment when interacting with students and colleagues
- Demonstrate the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
- Demonstrate understanding of, and commitment to, childhood social, emotional and intellectual development within an international school setting.
Expectations:
- Help supervise and guide students in appropriate behavior and interactions in the library
- Manage circulation: Check books in and out using the Destiny circulation system both within the library and within classrooms with the moveable circulation cart
- Shelve books and other library items in the correct locations
- Train volunteers to support library tasks such as shelving of books and other library items.
- Support students with technology use (catalog searches, digital resources, use of devices, etc.)
- Catalog periodicals, journals, and other library resources
- Select and/or read books to classes as required by the Lower School Librarian
- Assist in the preparation and organization for special events (author visits, puppet shows, guest readers, etc.)
- Support the Librarian with the organization and promotion of special programs, such as summer reading or the “Rallye Lecture”
- Perform other duties as deemed necessary (preparing materials for lessons, processing of new books/resources, creating displays, preparing curated collections for classrooms, annual collection inventory, managing spreadsheets and documents, etc.)
- Attend and positively contribute to grade, faculty, division and all-school meetings as necessary.
- Supervise students during lunch, recess, and other non-instructional times as required
