What are the responsibilities and job description for the Pastry Assistant/Cake Decorator position at The Baker and the Cakemaker?
We are looking for a pastry assistant. Sundays and evenings off, although occasional changes may happen ahead of certain holidays. Shifts include early mornings.
The proper candidate for this role will share our enthusiasm for creating high quality products, and will be committed to our culture of teamwork, creativity, and love of good food! This person will also:
- Assist with production of cakes and other bakery products.
- Prepare a wide variety of goods such as cakes, cookies, bread etc. following traditional and modern recipes.
- Monitor stocks for baking ingredients such as flour, sugar etc.
- Check quality of material and condition of equipment and devices used for cooking.
- Maintain a lean and orderly cooking station and adhere to health and safety standards.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Pastry/cake experience in a similar environment or as a culinary school grad/intern (willing to train the right person)
- Experience decorating cakes & pastries using different icings, toppings, etc. (willing to train the right person)
- Knowledge of food safety regulations and best practices.
- Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to multitask.
- Strong communication skills to collaborate with team members.
- Strong willingness to learn with the ability to work independently.
- Ability to work quickly, cleanly and efficiently in this fast-paced and exciting environment while maintaining attention to detail.
Must have reliable transportation and be punctual.
Must be able to lift 50 pounds and stand for long periods.
Must be able to work early mornings and holidays.
Excellent time management skills to prioritize tasks effectively.

- Early mornings - as early as 4AM until as late as 3PM. 4-3 is not a shift, rather it's the window within which shifts fall, so staff must be willing to work within this window
- Open availability Mon-Sat. Staff does not work Mon-Sat, rather this is the window staff must be available to be scheduled. This means no "I need every (fill in the day) off"
- Must be able to commit to working every Saturday, occasional holidays, and frequent day-before and day-after holiday. For example, availability is required for the days before & after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, day after Christmas, etc.
- Must be able to commit to a long-term role; that is, a commitment to stay a year or longer. Non-enforceable of course, but we trust the candidate will make a good faith commitment
- Must be open to training and to a friendly-but-firm "yes chef" approach
- A record of hard work and reliability in past positions (we will check!)
