Position: Lifeguard/Swim Instructor

The Baldwin School is hiring certified Lifeguards/Swim Instructors to join our Summer Camp! The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor is responsible for teaching swimming lessons, guarding the pool during open swimming, ensuring the safety of all people in the pool area, responding to emergency situations and learning procedures to maintain the cleanliness of the pool facility. Lifeguards will start June 11th, 2025 for 3 days of paid mandatory training. Our camp runs Monday through Friday June 16th - August 1st.
Responsibilities:
Pool Safety & Surveillance:
- Monitor the Pool Area: Constantly observe swimmers to ensure they are following all safety rules and guidelines. Ensure all participants are visible and safe at all times.
- Prevent Accidents: Be proactive in preventing accidents or unsafe behavior by maintaining a visible presence and enforcing pool rules.
- Scan for Hazards: Watch for potential safety hazards, such as overcrowding, rough play, or swimmers in distress.
- Ensure Pool Depth Awareness: Keep swimmers informed about pool depths, and ensure they stay in areas that are appropriate for their swimming ability.
2. Emergency Response:
- Rescue Operations: In case of an emergency, respond swiftly and appropriately to rescue individuals in distress, using the correct life saving techniques.
- Administer First Aid/CPR: Provide immediate first aid, CPR, or other medical care as needed until emergency medical services arrive.
- Emergency Equipment Management: Ensure that all lifesaving and emergency equipment, such as rescue tubes, life jackets, and first aid kits, are in good working condition and accessible.
3. Enforce Safety Rules & Regulations:
- Supervise Pool Rules: Enforce all pool safety rules, including no running, no diving in shallow areas, and no rough play. Ensure that all campers and staff are aware of and adhere to these rules.
- Conduct Swim Tests: Administer swim tests to assess swimmers' abilities and determine appropriate pool areas for different skill levels.
Pool Maintenance & Housekeeping:
- Keep Pool Area Clean: Maintain cleanliness around the pool, including picking up trash, removing debris from the pool, and ensuring the pool deck is dry and free of obstacles.
- Assist with Pool Set-Up & Take-Down: Help with the daily setup and take-down of pool equipment, such as lane markers, floatation devices, and chairs.
Camper & Staff Interaction:
- Be a Positive Role Model: Set an example by maintaining a positive, professional, and approachable attitude, especially when interacting with campers, staff, and parents.
- Provide Water Safety Education: Educate campers about water safety, swimming techniques, and the importance of following pool rules. Engage in brief safety talks when appropriate.
- Monitor Group Swim Activities: Supervise campers during group swimming activities, ensuring they follow instructions and stay within safe boundaries.
Communication & Reporting:
- Incident Reporting: Report any incidents, accidents, or injuries immediately to the Camp Director and Head Lifeguards and document incidents as required.
- Coordinate with Staff: Communicate with other lifeguards, counselors, and camp staff to ensure that all areas of the pool are properly supervised, especially during breaks or transitions.
Additional Duties:
- Attend Staff Meetings & Training: Participate in regular lifeguard meetings, safety drills, and required training sessions
- Support Other Camp Activities: Assist with other camp activities as needed
Required Qualifications
- Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age, by June 1st, 2025
- At least 1 year of lifeguard experience required
- Swim instructor experience preferred
- Previous experience working with children
- Must have certifications: Current American Red Cross Lifeguard or Water Safety Instructor certification or American Red Cross Lifeguard or Water Safety Instructor equivalent
- Push/pull, lift and carry a minimum of thirty-five (35) pounds across campus. Be upright, and mobile for an extended period of time.
- Must have the physical capability to see (near and far), climb, bend, swim, float, kneel and carry individuals during rescue operations
- Prior teaching experience is a plus
