What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bureau Chief, Baltimore County position at The Baltimore Sun?
The Baltimore Sun is seeking a Baltimore County Bureau Chief. The Baltimore County Bureau Chief will help assemble a team of reporters and drive coverage of key county issues, from local government and education to crime, and business. The Bureau Chief will also be a key figure in developing strategic editorial initiatives and ensuring that the newsroom remains connected to the community.
Essential Functions
- Plan, coordinate, write and edit in-depth news coverage of county-wide topics, ensuring stories are comprehensive, accurate, and compelling.
- Work closely with the editorial team to develop news strategies, covering a range of issues, including politics, crime, schools, business, health, and cultural events.
- Ensure high editorial standards, from story accuracy and fair representation to adherence to the newspaper’s editorial voice.
- Collaborate with other departments, including digital and multimedia teams, to create multi-platform content and engage readers across various channels.
- Foster strong relationships with local government officials, law enforcement, community leaders, and other stakeholders to uncover key issues and stories that matter most to Baltimore County residents.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience required
- Minimum 5 years of professional reporting and editing experience (news publication and/or daily or weekly journalism experience strongly preferred)
- Must be able and willing to work irregular hours and holidays as necessary
- Must be familiar with computers and software, including Internet software
- Excellent command of verbal and written English
Salary Range: $70,000 to $90,000
Individual compensation may vary from the target range based on several factors including experience, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations.
