The Director of Nursing will be responsible for planning, organizing, establishing, administering, and implementing a nursing program that will reflect the Philosophy of Care of BHHM and cooperate with all disciplines to provide for the maximum physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual well‑being of each resident.

Qualifications

  • Accredited and sufficient education to obtain a degree in nursing as a Registered Nurse and maintains a current license as a Registered Nurse in the state of Missouri.
  • Good communication and public relation skills with residents, resident's families, contact persons, staff, and the public.
  • Ability to exercise leadership and give supervision to staff.
  • General understanding of the aging process and the changes that come with aging.
  • Familiar with the Department of Health and Senior Services LTC regulations.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in problem-solving, remain objective, and impartial.
  • Ability to relate to residents on a feeling level; to deal with emotional issues in a nonjudgmental and consistent manner.
  • Sufficient typing, computer and documenting skills.
  • Responsibilities and Tasks
  • To be responsible for the day‑to‑day operation of the Nursing Department.
  • To interview and hire nursing staff in consultation with the administrator.
  • To write job descriptions for Nursing Department personnel.
  • To delegate nursing assignments and maintain a monthly work schedule.
  • To find replacements for absentees.
  • To develop and direct plans of action for Charge Nurses and conduct monthly Charge Nurse Meetings.
  • To develop and implement orientation, training and evaluation plans for Nursing Department personnel.
  • To be available to serve as Charge Nurse when needed and willing to keep flexible hours to maintain a close working relationship with all nursing personnel.
  • To formulate, implement and give oversight of nursing policies and procedures to comply with the Division of Aging regulations and in keeping with BHHM policy including, but not necessarily limited to:
  • Resident care; personal and bathing care, care for bed and geriatric chair residents, incontinent residents, and the handling of residents clothing,
  • Medication policies; proper handling and documentation of all medicines, receiving oral and written physician orders, storing and distribution of medicines,
  • Medical appointments; arrangements for regular and emergency appointments, and assistance in the transfer.
  • To be responsible for the supervision and correct charting of nursing procedures, and the orientation and training of Nursing Department personnel and periodic evaluation thereof, including, but not necessarily limited to: Nursing summaries, Medication Administration Forms, PRN Medication Administration Forms, Record of Administration of Narcotics, Monthly Vital Signs and Weight Records, Incident Report Forms, Medication Incident Report Forms, Restraint Records, Intake and Output Records, Treatment Progress Notes, Charting requirements for admissions, discharges, and visits, Resident extended leave of absence charting, including; Medications sent, Signature of Responsible Party, What to do in case of an emergency, Facility Contact Information, Nurse's notes, Resident Care Plans, Physician's Orders (oral or written), Reporting changes in resident's condition, including; Vital signs, Skin changes, Mental alertness, Intake and output, Appetite change, Refusal of medications, Emotional state, Accident/Incident, Death, Lab reports, Transfer forms, Resident assessment forms.
  • To be responsible for the supervision and administration of medication including, but not necessarily limited to: Preparation, administration, reporting, recording, ordering, and storage of controlled and noncontrolled substances, Preparation, administration, reporting, recording, ordering, and storage of medical supplies, Monthly review of physician-prescribed medications.
  • To be responsible for the supervision and administration of special procedures; this may be required by physician orders including, but not necessarily limited to: Suctioning, Indications and monitoring of oxygen, Vital Signs, Apical pulse, Restraints according to BHHM policy and procedures, Emergency procedures, Drug reactions, Sitz Bath, Inhalation therapy, Dressing change, N.G. and Gastric tube placement and feeding, Catheterization, Tracheotomy care, Use and care of prosthetic devices, Proper monitoring and discontinuance of IV infusions, Suture and staple removal, Colostomy irrigations, Rectal tubes, Ear irrigations, Assist the physician with diagnostic procedures, CPR applications, Nail care, especially to Diabetic residents, Foley Catheter irrigations as ordered.
  • To be responsible for the supervision and administration of the overall Resident Plan of Care including, but not necessarily limited to: Participate in the Assistive Care Team and implement care plans, Encourage residents maximum participation in Activities of Daily Living and to increase their independence, Relate to residents in a kind manner allowing the expression of feelings and to make choices whenever possible,
  • Exercise oversight at the completion of the Resident Assessment Instrument.
  • To participate in Staff Meetings and other meetings as assigned.
  • Flexibility in job assignments during emergencies and at the direction of the Administrator, as needed.
