Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and proactive Safety Specialist to oversee and manage all safety operations within the sawmill. The Safety Specialist will develop, implement, and enforce safety programs and policies to ensure a safe working environment for all employees. This position requires a strong understanding of safety regulations, a commitment to fostering a culture of safety, and the ability to lead by example in promoting a safe, accident-free workplace.
Primary Duties:
- Primary Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive safety programs, procedures, and policies to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations.
- Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments to identify hazards and recommend corrective actions to prevent accidents or injuries.
- Train and educate employees on safety protocols, hazard recognition, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and safe work practices.
- Investigate workplace accidents, injuries, and near-misses, and prepare detailed reports with recommendations for corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
- Ensure that all safety equipment, tools, and machinery are in proper working condition and regularly inspected.
- Monitor safety performance and maintain records of safety training, incidents, and inspections.
- Lead safety meetings and ensure that safety issues are communicated effectively throughout the plant.
- Stay updated on safety laws, regulations, and best practices to ensure that the sawmill’s safety policies are current and compliant.
- Foster a culture of safety by promoting employee involvement, conducting safety awareness campaigns, and encouraging open communication regarding safety concerns.
- Collaborate with department managers to ensure that safety goals align with production and operational objectives.
- Conduct emergency preparedness drills and ensure the sawmill is prepared for potential emergency situations.
- Serve as a liaison with regulatory agencies and third-party safety consultants, ensuring compliance during inspections and audits.
- Oversee the implementation of accident reporting systems and manage workers’ compensation claims in collaboration with HR. Duties.
Qualifications:
- Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations, safety standards, and risk management techniques.
- Previous experience developing and implementing safety programs and conducting safety training.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with all levels of employees, including management and production staff.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to walk, stand, and inspect various work areas across the facility.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects as needed during inspections.
- Ability to work in a noisy, dusty, and potentially hazardous environment.
