Lower School Music Teacher Job Description

Classification : This is a full-time, exempt position during the school year.

Reporting to the Lower School Principal, the Lower School Music Teacher will provide direction for Lower School musical programs including weekly Chapel, evening student performances, Cadet Singers, and an after-school club. The Lower School Music Teacher plays an essential role in educating and supporting students in their understanding of music theory, history, and performance. The Lower School Music Teacher works in conjunction with the office and Lower School teachers to ensure alignment with the School calendar and effective internal and external communication. The Lower School Music Teacher will foster an environment in which students can discover and enjoy music, while building important skills.

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to :

  • Kindles a passion for learning
  • Uses technology as a vehicle for learning but not an end goal
  • Engages a variety of learning methods
  • Foster and model critical, creative thinking and collaboration
  • Marked by consistent communication with students
  • Flexible in response to students progress
  • Provide clarity on biblical truths found in subject matter
  • Masters the skills and content of courses
  • Organizes classroom time, space and activities
  • Lead worship music portion of Lower School Chapel

Plan songs and prepare instruments, dance moves, or student participation in advance

  • Leverage technology to aide music or videos with adequate preparation and coordination with faculty for support
  • Organize and lead Cadet Singers (choir, grades 3-5)
  • Organize auditions

  • Run practices in accordance with standards for managing a classroom
  • Arrange performances and communicate effectively with student families, and faculty
  • Arrange musical performances
  • Plan for and involve Lower School office in scheduling student performances

  • Hold auditions; assign parts and supply students with everything they need to be successful
  • Manage time to ensure students are prepared and events are effectively marketed and communicated
  • Plan for set up for rehearsals and day-of performances
  • Coordinate with teachers for rehearsals as needed
  • Plan and supervise a music-related club and a team for academic competitions
  • Teach music classes to PreK-5th grade students, following standards and curriculum
  • Music standards, music theory, introduction to various instruments

  • Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift 25lbs at times.
  • Ability to sit at a desk and work on a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to stand and traverse around a classroom, building, common area, etc. and adjust tone and height, by bending or leaning, in order to teach, engage, and interact with each student for extended periods of time.
