Under the supervision of the Director of Respiratory Therapy (DRT), the Respiratory Therapist (RT) Supervisor is to coordinate with the Care Center of Honolulu (CCOH) leadership to ensure respiratory care is provided effectively and efficiently in the Ventilator Care Unit (VCU), the Respiratory Care Unit (RCU) and other units in which respiratory care may be requested. The RT Supervisor is responsible for the accuracy and completion of Resident Assessments, changes in condition and recognition of signs and symptoms of respiratory distress. RT Supervisor is a line of support and resource for staff, physicians, and other related providers concerning Respiratory Therapy specific clinical issues and topics. They will lead, perform, evaluate and coordinate therapeutic clinical procedures as defined in the Respiratory Care Services scope of clinical practice as outlined by the State of Hawaii and in accordance with physician orders. RT Supervisor will be responsible for effective coaching and mentoring for core staff.
Essential Job Functions: Leadership support
- Effectively leads and supervises RT staff to ensure compliance with meal breaks, managing downtime, attendance and other Human Resources and Administrative policies.
- Monitors and manages staffing and allocation of resources/inventory to meet resident care and operational needs.
- Reviews, analyzes and makes recommendations for revisions to policies and procedures related to Respiratory Care Services primarily to Residents who reside on VCU/RCU and others in the facility.
- Stays current on RT and healthcare trends and changes that may impact clinical operations.
- Recommends revisions to skills check off lists and annual competency evaluations.
- Monitors and reports all patient care, safety, medication, technical, and employee incidents.
- Monitors adherence to policy, procedures and practice guidelines. Monitor ventilator protocol adherence.
- Communicates daily activities to RT Director
- Provides ongoing orientation, training and competency checks for newly hired Therapists, Nursing and existing staff.
- Actively engages in employee engagement and resident experience, appraises the performance of RT staff members.
- Serves on department related committees.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Essential Job Functions: Clinical Support
- Understands the diversity of residents needs and demonstrates the general knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate resident support.
- Effectively leads VCU and RCU direct care RT staff to ensure compliance with CCOH policies and procedures, including universal precautions and infection control policies.
- Demonstrates strong critical thinking, delegate and make effective decisions.
- Capable of prioritizing both planned and unplanned events, and proactively addresses actual and potential problems, exceeding patient or client expectations. Respond to and support staff in emergency situations.
- Monitors daily operations of VCU and RCU and provides clinical leadership to staff.
- Delivers Resident, family, and Caregiver education/training in accordance with Plan of Care or discharge instructions.
- Capable of learning and teaching RT technology utilized primarily in VCU and RCU.
- Promotes and supports collaborative communication between clinical and non-clinical staff. Utilizes SBAR model of communication at shift change/hand off care.
- Functions as a liaison between RT staff and RT Director.
- Participates in implementing Quality Improvement initiatives, projects and in-services.
- Documents and reports any malfunctioning or broken equipment.
- Documents and reports residents’ changes in condition.
- Assures safe working environment.
- Must be available to work shifts as necessary based on Facility Operations; services are provided 24/7.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
- Good communication and organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
- Ability to write and read and understand the English language sufficiently to perform the duties of the position.
- General knowledge and proficiency in use of clinical software including Point Click Care and/or similar software programs.
- Ability to exhibit a high level of confidentiality.
- Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment, manages competing demands and ability to deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events.
- Computer skills, including Word and Excel
- Able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to plan and provide care appropriate to the age and special needs of patient served.
Education/License Requirements
- Successful completion of a degree in Respiratory Care, Healthcare, Business, Leadership or a field related to the assigned clinical discipline, bachelor's degree preferred.
- Current State of Hawaii RT licensure. Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC), Adult Critical Care Specialty (ACCS) by the NBRC preferred. CPR Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
Experience
- Two years of experience in respiratory therapy, including at least one year of experience in intensive care respiratory therapy; supervisory experience preferred.
