Mentor Job Description
The RAY Program is a fundamental component of the vision of the Los Angeles County Department of Youth Development’s (DYD) commitment to equitable prevention, early intervention, and reentry through youth development. The program will be delivered by mentors with lived experience of justice system involvement and are an important resource for young people who experience barriers to access services, especially young people of color who have historically been disproportionately excluded by traditional systems and services. Mentors are trained in trauma-responsive approaches for building trust, providing care coordination and system navigation, and facilitating conflict resolution and crisis intervention with youth. Through mentorship, young people will receive authentic guidance and support from individuals who share common life experiences.
Mentor Responsibilities
- Mentor, motivate, and empower youth participants to become positive members of
their communities by establishing a trusting and open relationship
- Conduct outreach and engagement of eligible youth for program enrollment
- Assess participants at the point of enrollment and provide appropriate linkages and
referrals to needed services through an individualized care plan
- Conduct intake and exit assessments
- Maintain contact with youth participants 2 times a week at minimum, one of which
should be in person. Document interaction by updating case notes and care plans
- Develop relationships with service providers to refer and link youth participants for
any supportive services that are not offered in-house
- Identify community resources appropriate to meet youth participants’ needs and
assist through appointment accompaniment, transportation assistance, and coaching
- Attend all required trainings and events organized by the County to foster learning
and community
- Exit youth participants who have successfully completed service and/or who are
no longer actively engaged.
Mentor Qualifications
- Prior history of justice-system involvement and/or have been directly impacted by
the justice involvement and/or incarceration of a family member(s).
- Demonstrate a period of stability and success in the community following system involvement and/or incarceration and are deeply connected and rooted in their
communities.
- Prior experience working with individuals with system involvement, mental illness,
SUD, experiencing homelessness, and/or experience assisting community members in navigating health and social service systems.
- Ability to communicate and build rapport with youth.
- Ability to follow program protocols and instructions
- Some experience with case notes documentation and/or case notes database systems.
- Ability to work independently and with a team
- Ability to manage time and prioritize duties and time-sensitive tasks.
- Must be insurable and have a current valid Driver’s License,
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: From $29.00 per hour
