Overview

The Associate Head Athletic Trainer is responsible for planning, coordinating and implementing programs for the prevention, evaluation and rehabilitative treatment to athletes involved in various intercollegiate athletics programs at the University. Must know how to manage catastrophic sports trauma, professional first aid and CPR and principles of physiology, kinesiology and anatomy. This position is also responsible for the education of coaches and Athletics’ department staff in first aid, CPR, and AED application. This requires certification by either the American Heart Association/ American Red Cross Instructor program. In addition, this position is responsible for coordination of the athletic training room work-study and student employee program. Responsibilities include completion of appropriate hiring and compensation paperwork, as well as scheduling of students. This position is also responsible for the coordination of Club Sport medical coverage as needed. This position is responsible for assisting the Head Athletic Trainer in planning, coordinating and implementing programs for the prevention, evaluation and rehabilitative treatment to athletes involved in various intercollegiate athletics at the University. This position is also responsible for compliance in the various administrative regulations of the athletic training room. These include performing pre-participation concussion baseline testing, injury assessment documentation, and secondary insurance claims information. Engage in programs and services that support the student life mission and commitment to contribute positively to the campus community of research, teaching, learning, and service to the Church, the nation and the world.

Responsibilities

  • Injury care and prevention Responsible for the identification of injuries, care of CUA student-athletes, and the prevention and treatment of their injuries.
  • Clearance Coordinate the pre-participation clearance process as well as the approval of student-athletes return to competition.
  • Supervision Assist with the recruitment of professional and student staff. Provide input regarding assistant athletic trainers and part-time staff as part of annual evaluation process.
  • Scheduling Scheduling of athletic training coverage for practices and competitions at multiple home and away sites, requiring some travel.
  • Compliance/Certification Ensure compliance with national, local, university, NCAA, MARC and Landmark conference laws, regulations, standards and codes. Main point of contact from athletics department for First Aid, AED, and CPR certification. (Note: The violation of NCAA and conference rules is prohibited and may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination).
  • Coaching, Training, Instruction Perform as a professional educator and role model to enable individual students to develop as student-athletes and to work together as a successful, competitive intercollegiate team.

Qualifications

A Bachelor's Degree and must have three years proven experience as an athletic trainer; at least one year practicing beyond Graduate Assistant experience. Collegiate professional experience preferred; consideration given to those with varied sport medical coverage. Must have experience managing sports related injuries and be able to implement principles of first aid, CPR, physiology, kinesiology and anatomy in order to manage such injuries. 

 

Athletic Trainer Certified by National Board of Certification and in good standing. American Red Cross Professional Rescuer Certification or equivalent. Must be proficient with using MS Office applications (MS Word, Excel, and Outlook) and Google applications (Calendar, documents and email). Ability to use online injury tracking software, Sportsware experience appreciated.

 

Knowledge of the pre-participation clearance process, including relationship between the athletics department and insurance and health care providers. Rehabilitative experience, experience with manual therapy techniques (massage, IASTM, cupping). Ability to communicate in a clear, professional, and timely manner with the other sports medicine staff, coaches, and athletes. Ability to plan, organize, and set priorities. Strong service orientation and ability to relate effectively with diverse individuals and groups at all levels of an organization. Ability to work collegially and collaboratively. Demonstrated ability to be productive, deliver high quality work, take initiative, use good judgment and solve problems. Strong interpersonal, community development and negotiation skills. Must be able to generate the confidence and trust of individuals and the extended campus community. Ability to communicate effectively by using a wide variety of tools and mediums. Strong ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and handle heavy workloads under pressure and within deadlines.
