Overview

The Director of Campus Sustainability is a key leader on the management team for Facilities Planning and Management (FPM) and reports directly to the Associate VP / University Architect. The primary responsibility of this position is the establishment and management a formal sustainability program for the University. The Director provides thought leadership, advises University policy and decision makers, oversees outreach and programs, submits and tracks mandated compliance and regulatory reports, and communicates sustainability performance and progress. The Director of Campus Sustainability will supervise other professionals and interns in the department.

 

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is: up to $100,000 - $110,000. 

Responsibilities

  • Sustainability Leadership and Strategic Direction
    • Provides thought leadership on sustainability, environmental stewardship, and resilience.
    • Develops, implements, and evaluates strategic sustainability goals, practices, and initiatives in collaboration with diverse university stakeholders.
    • Researches and evaluates new sustainable technologies, services, and opportunities for campus.
  • Management of the University Sustainability Plan and Related Programs
    • Maintains and implements a whole school sustainability plan unique to The Catholic University of America based on industry best practices; including goals, measurements, milestones, and detailed implementation recommendations based on existing operations.
    • Serves as a subject matter expert to project teams and staff, providing information and expertise regarding sustainable ideas, systems, and products.
    • Performs data collection and analysis on sustainability key performance indicators.
    • Manages the submission of all regulatory and voluntary internal and external sustainability reports.
    • Provides easy-to-understand presentations of findings and recommendations as requested.
  • Culture of Continuous Improvement
    • Manages staff and faculty outreach and collaboration initiatives, including initiatives to incorporate sustainability into the curriculum and the workplace.
    • Manages student engagement initiatives on campus including but not limited to the community garden, food recovery program, and green move-out program, and mentors student organizations focused on sustainability and the environment.
    • Identifies and implements new engagement opportunities for students, staff, and faculty across campus.
  • Communication, Collaboration, and Customer Service
    • Communicates with a wide variety of internal and external constituents, including executive management.
    • Promotes university activities, programs, and accomplishments in the area of sustainability by overseeing and maintaining all sustainability communications and marketing channels. Maintains the Office of Campus Sustainability webpage and distributes periodic Green Newsletters.
    • Designs and maintains sustainability resources and tools that can assist others in integrating sustainability into their work.
    • Works closely with university staff to ensure compliance with university standards and systems.
    • Represents the University in external engagements with subject matter authority and relevance.
    • Participates in internal committees and taskforces.
  • Organizational Effectiveness and Professional Development
    • Supervises and mentors Office of Campus Sustainability staff and interns.
    • Manages the operational budget allocated for the Office of Campus Sustainability.
    • Assists in obtaining bids and overseeing contract work for sustainability initiatives, as appropriate.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's or Master's Degree  in Sustainability, Environmental Science, Architecture, Engineering, or related fields of study. 
    • Minimum 7 years professional experience with demonstrated progressive experience and leadership in corporate sustainability. 
    • Preferred experience in a university setting or within the context of facilities planning and management.
    • Proven experience establishing a new program within an existing organization.
    • Established ability to manage high profile, multi-stakeholder projects. Proven track record of initiating and managing mutually beneficial stakeholder relationships.
    • Experienced in budget development and management.
    • Assists in obtaining bids and overseeing contract work for sustainability initiatives, as appropriate.
    • LEED or equivalent credential in sustainability required within one year of employment.
    • Ability to plan, organize, set priorities, implement, and evaluate programs and services in support of the Office of Campus Sustainability’s broad organizational goals.
    • Ability to communicate effectively and with a strong service orientation with all levels of universitystakeholders.
    • Ability to be productive, deliver high quality work, take initiative, and use good judgment/problem analysis.
    • Ability to produce quality results with limited resources while handling multiple tasks simultaneously.
    • Ability to translate knowledge and skills into action.
    • Strong knowledge of environmental best practices.
    • Strong creative and solutions-oriented mindset.

    Salary : $100,000 - $110,000
