DIRECT CARE WORKER

POSITION SUMMARY : The Direct Care Worker is a role model and is responsible for the care and guidance of individuals. The nature of care varies to some extent in accordance with needs of individuals. The work may involve physical care, supervision and personal hygiene. Guidance in work, study, social, spiritual, and recreational activities may also be assigned. Employees supervise the individuals in housekeeping responsibilities and in the formalized and non-formalized recreational and leisure time activities. Direct Care Workers record observed behaviors and interactions with groups and peers. Employees may have food service and housekeeping responsibilities. The employee will be accountable to the Program Supervisor and / or the Program Director. Duties include crisis prevention and intervention, crisis counseling, and monitoring of students in crisis. The employee will be expected to perform in all programs assigned, and expected to perform other related duties as assigned.

Accountable and responsible for the following results :

  • Assists in planning and supervising activities for individuals both on and off grounds.
  • Supervises daily living activities, including routines, mealtime, work, play, and study.
  • Maintains care, welfare, safety and security through direct supervision of individuals, in addition to recognizing and correcting conditions which are, or could be, considered safety hazards.
  • Demonstrates effort to promote the agency Inclusion Policy by : a). identifying inequities and bias and appropriately raising concerns, b). interacting with others respectfully, c). being curious about the experiences of individuals who do not share your race, gender, religion, sexual orientation or any other relevant quality.
  • Supervises and, when necessary, performs household duties such as cleaning, food service, care and maintenance of property and vehicles, while at the same time teaching these skills.
  • Maintains order and discipline through positive and progressive treatment modalities. Effectively deals with crisis situations as per Agency policy.
  • Transports clients to and from program, off grounds activities, home visits and appointments.
  • Participates in staff and departmental meetings, in-service training programs, and attends staff meetings, workshops, and conferences. Effectively utilizes supervision.
  • Engages in a trauma sensitive approach to treatment and care of individuals.
  • Recognizes and interprets behaviors as adaptations to trauma and aids in developing and interpreting self-capacities.
  • Utilizes restorative tasks to repair relationships.
  • Guides individuals in their emotional and social growth and provides interventions that will assist them in achieving their goals.
  • Maintains, and is responsible for, the safe keeping of Agency records, including case histories, behavioral adjustment, daily population, and other required administrative data.
  • Maintains a file pertaining to Agency policies as well as ensuring personal compliance with administrative directives.
  • Records and reports observed positive and negative individual behavior.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all client information and records. Ensures compliance with agency policy and procedure.
  • Maintains accurate and timely paperwork and record-keeping.
  • Successfully completes CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) training and performs physical restraints with individuals as a last resort when needed.
  • Maintains all required agency mandatory trainings.
  • Participates in staff and departmental meetings, in-service training programs, and attends meetings as required, workshops, and conferences. Effectively utilizes supervision.
  • Maintains appropriate personal boundaries with young people and families served at The Children's Center of Hamden. Adheres to The Children's Center of Hamden's Boundary Code of Ethics.
  • Is aware of the Policy and Procedure Manuals and can access information as needed.
  • Demonstrates effort to promote the agency Inclusion Policy by :
  • Identifying inequities and bias, and appropriately raising concerns.
  • Interacting with others respectfully.
  • Respecting the experiences of individuals who do not share your race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or any other relevant quality.
  • Maintains care, welfare, safety and security of the children by reporting conditions which are or could be considered safety hazards.
  • Performs any other related work assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

BA / BS in Human Services preferred and may be required in some programs. Two years of experience in the field of human services is preferred. Knowledge of direct care and of teaching methods. Ability to understand challenges of individuals served, identify needs, and to resolve conflicts as they arise. Ability to maintain discipline and order. Interest in human service and mature judgment in dealing with their behavior problems.

LICENSURE /

CERTIFICATIONS

A Valid Driver's License with a safe driving record is required. Must be able to transport individuals to and from program, and to off grounds activities and appointments.
