Job Title: ORR Bilingual Teacher’s Aide
Position Summary:
The Unaccompanied Alien Children Program referred by the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), provides temporary residential care and other supportive services to Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC) who are under legal custody of the Federal Government. In the basic shelter program, we provide therapeutic and educational services and other supports that youth need to achieve success through an array of strength-based and targeted interventions as well as link them with family members and/or other sponsors in the United States, so they are able to move forward with their lives and thrive. The teacher’s aide will assist the Teacher’s in providing education for all youth in the program.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Work a 12-month school calendar
- Participate in education programs at various academic skill levels (including English as a Second Language class)
- Monitor the youth’s participation to ensure adequate instruction and assistance to each individual
- Provides support to the lead teacher in classroom instruction and management
- Assists with classroom activities and lessons
- Works with individual students who require additional or modified instruction
- Administers assessments and quizzes to students
- Grades tests and homework and completes other clerical work related to classroom operations.
- Monitors students when the lead teacher is out of the classroom.
- Escorts students to other areas of the school such as the cafeteria, playground, gym, or other classrooms; monitors their behavior during recess and lunchtime
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Thorough understanding of classroom procedures and management.
- Ability to relate to children and reinforce lessons taught in class.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to collaborate with lead teacher.
- Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma required; Associate’s degree or two years of college highly preferred.
- Eligible to obtain a New York State Teaching Assistant level 1 certification

- Varicella: two doses of varicella vaccine (at least four weeks apart) OR born in the United States before 1980 with a reported history of chickenpox (verified by an adult present at the time of illness) OR titers indicating varicella immunity OR documentation from a healthcare provider verifying previous infection.
- MMR: two doses of MMR vaccine (at least four weeks apart) OR titers indicating immunity to all three diseases.
- Tdap: one Tdap dose.
- Influenza: one dose annually during flu season. Per the CDC, flu season is from October through May.
