The StarPoint Summer Camp Cabin Intern acts as an assistant teacher with the StarPoint Summer Camp program (for youth in grades 1-6) for The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. The StarPoint Summer Camp Cabin Intern will research, plan, and create three assessment lessons that they will lead for their assigned cabin. To assist with this project, they will receive trainings in camp procedures/expectations, how to write a lesson plan, and how to include embedded assessments. They will also have a chance to hone their skills through planning and implementing an open house activity, camp preparation, and through daily interactions with campers.

The StarPoint Summer Camp Cabin Intern acts as an assistant teacher with the StarPoint Summer Camp program (for youth in grades 1-6) for The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. The StarPoint Summer Camp Cabin Intern will research, plan, and create three assessment lessons that they will lead for their assigned cabin. To assist with this project, they will receive trainings in camp procedures/expectations, how to write a lesson plan, and how to include embedded assessments. They will also have a chance to hone their skills through planning and implementing an open house activity, camp preparation, and through daily interactions with campers.
- Special consideration is given to those studying/experience in Elementary Education or related field.
- Help the lead teacher as an assistant teacher in one of the three cabins (rising 1st & 2nd graders, 3rd & 4th graders, and 5th & 6th) with daily camp lessons, projects, museum visits, library visits, field trips, and classroom management.
- Assist with the evaluation efforts for StarPoint. This includes interviewing campers, monitoring progress on projects, and entering data.
- Serve as a chaperone for camp field trips.
- Assist with camp preparation such as making classroom decorations, organizing supplies, and prepping lesson materials.
- Take photos during camp
- Assists with building an extraordinary learning experience for each StarPoint camper by serving as a positive role model.
- Help the lead teacher as an assistant teacher for Kids Science Camp which will take place the week after StarPoint Summer Camp.
- Observe other departments and museum positions to learn more about the museum’s operations.
- Contribute to an intern manual that will be referenced by future StarPoint Summer Camp Cabin Interns.
- Helps to monitor the environment for hazards or sanitary concerns to ensure a safe and healthy learning experience. Assists in correcting problems by following proper procedures, and/or removing StarPoint youth from hazards until it can be resolved.
- Follows all museum health and safety guidelines and maintains proper cleaning protocols.
- Assist with other department projects and/or events as needed.
- Be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree
- Have experience working with elementary-age children
- Preference will be given to juniors, seniors, or graduating seniors entering the workforce
- Have an academic background or experience in an education, classroom, or museum setting
- Have strong oral and written communication skills
- Possess experience in providing exceptional customer service
- Demonstrate excellent organizational and research skills
- Have the ability to multi-task
- Exhibit professional behavior and responsible work ethic
- Have web researching skills and basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Canva, and PowerPoint
- Must be available full-time during the entire internship (May 9th - August 1st)
- Must be available for some nights and weekends.
