The Children's Workshop is hiring an Executive Director

Position Summary:

The Executive Director of the Children’s Workshop Foundation (TCW') is responsible for the successful operation of The Children’s Workshop early childhood education schools. Together, the Board of Directors and Executive Director assure TCW’s relevance to the community, the accomplishment of TCW’s mission and vision, and the accountability of TCW to its diverse stakeholders. The Board delegates responsibility for management and day-to-day operations to the Executive Director who has the authority to carry out these responsibilities in accordance with the direction and policies established by the Board. The Executive Director provides direction to the Board as it carries out its governance functions.

The position is a full time, salaried exempt position with healthcare, dental, vision, a 403B retirement benefit with employer matching and paid time off benefits. Discounted child care tuition is also provided. Compensation ranges an annual salary between $90,000 and $115,000.

Founded in 1990, The Children’s Workshop became a mission-focused non-profit organization in 2020. TCW operates 5 early childhood education centers in Central Falls, Pawtucket, Providence, Rumford and Warren.

Our mission is to spark confidence, joy and love of learning in each child. TCW imagines strong and supportive school communities which foster continuous growth and development for each child, family member and educator. We accomplish this by providing exceptional early education and care to infants, toddlers, and preschool aged children in play-based nurturing environments staffed by our nurturing and highly skilled faculty.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to:

Maintain the mission and strategic direction of the organization

  • Work with the board and staff to cultivate and maintain TCW’s values, mission, vision and short- and long-term goals.
  • Monitor and evaluate TCW’s relevance to the community, its effectiveness, and its results.
  • Consistently and professionally demonstrate a strong understanding and practice of TCW’s “Workshop Ways”.
  • Lead growth and expansion efforts. Oversee new program development and expansion of programs in existing markets.
  • Stay informed of developments in early childhood education, human services, not-for-profit management, and governance, philanthropy, and fund development.

Management

  • Provide general oversight, manage the day-to-day operations, and ensure success of the Education, Operations, Finance, Marketing, Food Services and Human Resources departments.
  • Foster an environment that encourages personal and professional growth and development and provide learning and training opportunities to employees at all levels.
  • Assure an equitable work environment that recruits, retains, and supports quality staff and volunteers.
  • Visit schools periodically. Strive to be accessible and available to all stakeholders.

Governance:

  • Collaborate closely with the Board to focus on strategic issues and enable the Board to fulfill its governance function.
  • Guide and enable the Board, its fund development committee, and its members to participate actively in fundraising. Assist Board Chair in maintaining board bylaws, meeting agenda, meeting minutes, and other organizational records. Periodically review Board bylaws and policy, make recommended policy changes as needed.

Finance & Administration

  • Oversees the fiscal activities of the organization including budgeting, reporting , tax preparation and auditing.
  • Assure an effective fund development program is administered by the Board and supported by employees as appropriate.
  • Actively participate in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting prospective donors and/or effectively delegate these activities.
  • Lead and oversee staff to carry out fundraising events and campaigns.
  • Assure the development and operation of gift management systems and reports for quality decision making.

Legal Compliance:

  • Manage Regional Directors of Education and Operations along with other members of TCW Management Team to develop, implement, and oversee policies and procedures to ensure compliance of all regulations and best practices in all regards.
  • Assures the filing of all legal and regulatory documents and monitors compliance with relevant laws and regulations, including DHS regulatory documents and filings with the support of the Regional Director of Education.

Safety:

  • Ensure child safety, promote sound health and cleaning practices, and recognize, document, and report child abuse and neglect as needed. Address and/or report any safety violation of state regulations or company policies to a supervisor immediately.
  • Maintain and appropriately apply current knowledge of all applicable TCW health and safety policies.
  • Actively supervise children in accordance with TCW’s Child Supervision policy to ensure the emotional and physical safety of children in the program.
  • Maintain full knowledge of TCW emergency procedures and execute appropriately in an emergency situation, fire or lockdown drill to protect the well-being of children at all times.
  • Adapt safety practices as required in response to public health emergencies or seasonal requirements.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred in a field relevant to education and early childhood development including but not limited to Education, Early Childhood development, Communications, Public Administration, Finance, Business or Accounting.
  • 5-10 years experience in senior management positions in similar sized organizations, preferably with familiarity in the area of early childhood education.

Other Requirements:

  • Strong interpersonal, clear communication, problem solving, and priority setting skills as well as the ability to maintain a positive and professional attitude/disposition.
  • Reliable Transportation to TCW schools.
  • Must submit medical clearance and document immunizations as required by Rhode Island state law within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter.
  • Must pass state and federal background screenings as required by Rhode Island state law upon hire and maintain positive screening results during employment. This includes a Department of Children, Youth and Families Clearance Request along with state and federal criminal and sex offender registry screenings.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Executive Director has input into the management of all organization employees. This role manages senior management and leads personnel across education, operations, finance, human resources, food services and development departments.
